Birthday Bumps and other lost traditions

It’s DD’s birthday this weekend and I am busy organising her party. I mentioned to DH that we’ve never done the birthday bumps with our DC. the eldest is 14 now so I know it’s clearly been a long time coming!) Thought it might be fun to resurrect that little tradition and he looked at me like I had 2 heads with no clue what birthday bumps even were!

They were definitely a popular tradition when I was growing up (at parties and at home with families) but I’ve never seen or heard of them for years.

Anyone still give Birthday Bumps to their DC?

Any other traditions which have been lost over the years?

I've totally forgotten about birthday bumps!

I'm going to give the next birthday person I know the bumps....FIL is 71 next month 😏

Birthday bumps were part of school bullying where I came from and I was glad I was an August baby. People were injured by it.

Terrible tradition. It wasn't harmless fun and I hope it has faded away.

I had totally forgotten about the bumps!!!!!! South West UK here and the bumps where you got chucked in the air were totally the norm at school and places like brownies/guides on your birthday! Haven't heard of them for years and years though.

I’m nearly 55 and I was given birthday bumps by so called friends against my will, firstly I was wearing a skirt and I was on my period at the time and and secondly to this day I suffer with back problems now as a consequence.

I know birthday bumps as being knee-ed in the bum. Depending if it was your parents or friends depends on how gentle or not it was. North mid 70s, in Scotland.

We still do birthday bumps! Not all the time but sometimes, and gently. As in taking a leg/wrist each and chucking them in the air. DH had never heard of it, so it’s a my side of the family thing

EduCated · 28/09/2018 20:45

I know it as the being lifted in the air version, generally gently by your family, less so by school friends!

I am heartened to hear that others remember the bumps too! It was definitely a hold by the ankles/wrists and toss in the air thing when I was younger. It was generally done in good humour. Contrary to what a PP said though it was generally much more gentle with friends than with family in my case! When my siblings and I got together with our cousins the gloves were off!

DD is having a pool party tomorrow - I think this is the year to resurrect the bumps in our house!

We used to have the bumps at gymnastics. Birthday kid would lie on a big crash mat and we'd all hold on around the edges and fling the kid in the the air 😮

Aw man, had totally forgotten about birthday bumps! I suppose health and safety in schools would go into meltdown nowadays with them! Grin
At primary when I was there it was someone takes your ankles, another your wrists and you got lifted up into the air (one bump for every year so say you were 10 then you got 10 bumps lol.)

We didn’t do birthday bumps - it wasn’t something I’d even heard of as a child. But we did do birthday hair pulling - we even had a little birthday hair pulling ceremony in assembly once a week at primary school.
