Anyone does an intensive driving course?

I had a lot of driving lessons about 15 years ago and was about to apply for my test but then moved down South and that was that. I haven't driven since. I'm about to start a new job where driving would be a real advantage. I have applied for my provisional licence and I'm not sure whether to go for an intensive driving course, or whether to do 2-3 hours of lessons a week over a longer period. On the one hand, I would like to get my licence as soon as I'm ready, but on the other hand, I wonder if clocking up more hours on the road while learning would make you a better, safer driver

So if you did the intensive approach, what would your experience like and would you recommend it? Thanks

I did an intensive course after failing my test three times the conventional way. An hour a week just wasn't enough for me to progress and I didn't have access to another car to practice in in between. The intensive course was HARD. It was exhausting and quite expensive but I passed my test so it was worth it! I drove for about four or five hours a day (it was ages ago) but obviously started with a level of ability because I had already sat three tests... Blush

Not sure how it would go if you had never driven before though.

I did it and I would highly recommend it. I had 3 lessons a week for 3 weeks then passed my test with only 2 faults. It was absolutely worth it to have it done so quickly. The worst part was waiting for my test to arrive but I did weekly refresher lessons for a couple of weeks until my test date.

My son did it at 17. Passed first time.
Would highly recommended it.

My driving instructor said it can really work but isn't suitable for everyone and (assuming it's a Monday-Friday course) she could always tell by the Wednesday if the person was going to be able to do it or not.

You could argue that it's hours on the road that makes you a good driver, but I think that's the same whether you pass your test the conventional way or through an intensive course - the lessons just get you to the point where you can get through the test and the real learning starts after that.

All sounds very positive. Thanks everyone. I will definitely consider it. lurking, many people have told me that the real learning starts after you pass your test and you're out on the road independently! I'm nervous, but not petrified, and looking forward to getting on with it as soon as my provisional licence arrives Smile
