Can anyone help me remember what these 2 tv dramas were called?

One is about multiverse/many worlds/multiple dimensions. It’s about an author, or a writer of some sort, who isn’t very successful in our world, but somehow gets into a different dimension, where he’s very successful and rich and has an indoor swimming pool. I think this one is a one off tv drama, possibly bbc. That’s all I can remember about that one I think

And the other one was about a working class man (possibly from Yorkshire?) who meets and starts going out with a very upper class woman. She coaches him in how to appear upper class to her family and friends. I can remember a bit where she manicures and pedicures him (just a file, not gel nails or anything). There’s also a bit where he talks to her posh friends in his real accent and tells them what he really thinks of them, and they’re all shocked, but then he passes it off as a joke and pretends he’s just doing his northern bloke impression.

I’ve been trying to find out the names of these 2 for a while, so if anyone has any ideas I’d be really grateful Smile

Oh, no, definitely not the thing I'm thinking of, then.
Though it does remind me of Someone To Watch Over Me - film with Mimi Rogers and Tom Berenger in the 1980s... always liked that film, though it's dated very badly, I think

The first one sounds like the one where one of the characters can walk through a wall and time travels, and has a second life in another era where he ibecomes a successful songwriter (I think).

SummersB · 27/09/2018 10:44

Goodnight Sweetheart. Just noticed somebody said that unthread. Was that the one you were thinking of OP?

The second one sounds like 'Starlings' which was one of a series of screenplays. I think that had the manicure bit in it and there was a bit where they trampled on a new Barbour to make it look old. It was shown in 1988.

colouringinpro · 27/09/2018 10:46

Second on sounds like one of those Barbara Taylor Bradford dramas that were on in the early 90s. Someone like Sean Bean as the northern bloke???

RonniePickering · 27/09/2018 10:48

Lady Chatterley’s lover? Grin Grin

Those love scenes were the talk of the classroom the next day.

MadameButterface · 27/09/2018 10:49

mrs brittas turned up in the bodyguard recently, I was like who IS THAT????? then it dawned on me

there was a sitcom called 3 up 2 down where there was a rough man (Michael elphick?) whose ds had married a posh woman and they lived in a posh house with their baby, and rough bloke and posh woman's posh mum shared the house's basement flat, with hilarious consequences etc

MadameButterface · 27/09/2018 10:50

Sean bean is always the northern bloke in these things, if he's not dying an untimely death he's shagging posh potty above his station. sometimes he does both. he sure knows his wheelhouse Grin

Andtheresaw · 27/09/2018 10:53

The BBC did a miniseries adaptation of Room at the Top. Could that be the second one?

Unicornandbows · 27/09/2018 10:54

Red dwarf as the first one?

VanillaSugary · 27/09/2018 10:56

Kit Harrington said that the reason why half the cast of Game of Thrones speak with a Yorkshire accent is because Sean Bean can't do anything else Grin

The upper hand was modelled on the brilliant "Who's The Boss?" Tony Danza was brilliant in it.

my favourite was when he was a russian Bond villain... with a sheffield accent

The first one sounds a lot like 'Random Quest' which was on BBC4 in 2006 with Sam West.

www.imdb.com/title/tt0910572/

There was definitely a swimming pool in the basement in the parallel world - it stuck in my mind and now whenever I hear about the millionaires and billionaires doing this in London it always reminds me of that programme.

SlowlyShrinking · 27/09/2018 11:14

MissKittyCat yes! Thank you! Starlings is the 2nd one Smile

Thanks everyone! The power of mumsnet. I remember discussing random quest with my dad, who died recently, so I’m especially pleased to be able to watch it again

That made me laugh! But it also reminded me that he totally impressed the fuck out of me in a Jimmy McGovern series (BBC, six-parter, Accused? I think?) when he played a cross-dressing English teacher. (With a Yorkshire accent, natch.) What a part. He knows his wheelhouse, sure, but on the basis of that I'd love to see him step out of it more often.

buttybuttybutthole · 27/09/2018 11:25

Bloody helll!!!!

Thank you thank you for this somewhere my mind had emptied and I had never remembered random quest and now you have reminded me, I devoured it, watched it over and over and over!!!!!!

Also loved the upper hand and 2 point 4 children and they had slipped my mind tooSmileSmileoh to go back Smile

Still can't believe random quest! Nobody else seemed to appreciate it like I did Smile

MadameButterface · 27/09/2018 11:26

when he's good he's AMAZING

he chilled me to the core in Red Riding

SlowlyShrinking · 27/09/2018 11:32

buttybuttybutthole it’s on YouTube! I appreciated it! Can’t remember much if it tbh but I’ll be able to watch it with my ds now. So happy Grin

I'm definitely going to be watching it tonight 😃😃

chickendrizzlecake · 27/09/2018 11:44

Dammit. I'm sooo tempted to abandon all the chores and curl up with my knitting and Random Quest now.

liquidrevolution · 27/09/2018 11:55

I think random quest was based on a film in the70s with joan collins in. She certainly played a girl called ottilie and it involved parallel timelines.

It was called quest for love. www.imdb.com/title/tt0067645/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_83

Random quest sounds fab though. I dont remember it but like sam west so will have to see if its on youtube.

SlowlyShrinking · 27/09/2018 12:01

I’m very very tempted too chicken but must hold off and get stuff done 😬😁
