Upper back pain - when would you visit gp?

I've had pain between my shoulder blades for the last 6 weeks or so - it started off being an hour or two every few days, and has gradually got worse, to the point where it's almost all of the day every day now. It's not usually bad enough to stop what I'm doing, but it's just there all the time. Wakes me up sometimes, but not all the time. When it's bad paracetamol/ibuprofen doesn't seem to have any effect. hot water bottles sometimes help.

The only reason I'm hesitating about visiting the dr is that I've been several times over the last few months, and have ended up feeling like they see me as a bit of a hypochondriac (I've had chest pressure/breathing difficulties which they ended up concluding were probably indigestion related/anxiety or stress) and I can imagine I'd go in and they would dismiss it or tell me just to take stronger painkillers...

Is a gp the right first port of call? Would they do anything else other than painkillers? Should I just find a good osteopath/physio? (but then what if it's not muscle-related - would they figure that out and direct me back to gp for further tests?)

Sorry for all the questions - I'm not asking to be diagnosed, I promise - just don't want to feel really small if I ring up again for an appointment, if there's a better path I can take!
Thanks Smile

I would see the GP. I had upper back pain that turned out to be pneumonia.

Yes get it checked. I had upper back pain last week and it was pleurisy... I had no cough. Not trying to be dramatic but I also had breathing problems and pressure that they said were indigestion! It might be nothing but if it's every day and painkillers don't help it's worth having it looked at.

GP - explain it's getting worse, not controlled by over the counter meds and wakes you up at night.

GP visit, in all honesty it sounds as though an x-ray would be a good idea.

I’d see your GP as the first port of call so things like infection etc can be ruled out.
If all ok and the pain persists then maybe think about seeing a physio or osteopath in case it’s muscle related.

I needed a physio referral for mine by the time I went. I'd left it 5 months and needed a fair bit of physio to fix it. Just kept thinking it would sort itself but I was doing all the wrong things so it kept getting worse and ended up all the way round my ribs to my front. I've now got set exercises to do and as long as I do them I have no pain at all. Go!

GP here. I'd want to see you for this.
