Anyone used rice paper topper on a cake?

I have bought a rice paper topper to use on a cake for dh’s 40th, and slightly regretting it now as I have no instructions. If I fondant ice the cake, do I just brush with water and stick it on, then ice round it? Or will this dissolve the image?

Also, any ideas how long these things last? As in, if I make it in Friday will it last til Saturday?

I am tempted to spend the afternoon making an Everton badge out of fondant instead....worried that the rice paper will just look naff!

I've used a couple and they work really well. They look much more vibrant once you get them on the cake than just by themselves.

A little bit of water onto the cake if it's been iced for a while, but really not 'wet' just very slightly moist (hate that word but cant think of another that's suitable..).

I then cover the edges if they're really obvious with either icing or suitable little things to make a border (little footballs for example).

Good luck! I understand the pressure completely, but give it a go - you can always re-do if you dont like it Smile

I've not done a rice paper one but have used one printed on icing which worked well

I've used the ones printed on rice paper before. I put flat fondant icing on the cake and let that settle. Once dry, I brushed the back of the rice paper with water, put a very thin wipe of water onto the fondant icing and pressed it on.
Did this on the Friday evening for a Saturday afternoon party.

Brilliant, thanks. I’ve made loads of cakes but this is the first time I’ve used one of these things so I’m worried it will look awful.

I might try a sample tonight to see how it looks on a piece of fondant?

Just done a little sample size with a cupcake topper on fondant, so will check it tomorrow.

How did it come out? I remember I had to press quite firmly & repeatedly to get the thing to stick, but once it did, all was well. Here's one I did before...

That’s very cute marklah, did you stick it to a disc of fondant or direct onto the cake?

This is it, exactly 24 hours to the minute!

It’s survived the night in the utility room, cool and dry. I’m contemplating fixing the shield shape to a layer of white, before putting it on the cake? Wonder if that will look more professional? My piping skills aren’t amazing but I reckon I could do blobs around the edge in royal icing?

Dh has said he doesn’t want a party so this is being done on the sly, I even played up the not wanting a party and grumbled about the fact he’s left it very late to request a cake. Usually he gets candles on what’s left of DS’s as his is the day before so this is a running joke in our house!

Another question- does the rice paper thing cut well, or does it help to remove it before slicing through the cake?

bear I used the ready-roll fondant icing and stuck it straight on.
Yours looks incredible - it's so neat!
We cut straight through as it was on the whole of the top surface. Sharp knife did the trick.

This is the finished cake, although annoyingly I’ve dropped water onto the rice paper and it’s smudged, it’s a bit messy I think.

Looks good!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/09/2018 15:45

Thanks hardheaded,

I had piped round the edge but my piping bag burst open so I had to smooth it out over the top, which is why it looks so messy. It will be ok hopefully, everyone we’ve invited is too polite to say how awful it looks anyway!
