Is there such a chocolate cake as this?

I want to make a cake that is cake sized for a birthday but actually chocolate brownie in taste and texture. Would a cake be too thick for it to cook and that's why brownies were invented? I'm clueless.
Or could I make several layers of brownie and then stack?
Or alternatively if you have an amazing ultimate chocolate cake recipe can you please tell me what it is? Thanks

I do, but you'd have to wait for me to dig it out! I only make it twice a year.

Camelsinthegobi · 25/09/2018 19:20

You can’t make thicker brownies, they’d just get sludgy and not cooked at all in the middle. You can stack them. What shape are you aiming for?

Kelsoooo · 25/09/2018 19:21

I make one using oil instead of eggs. It’s amazing. Quite soft and seriously moist,

Agree with pp that a huge brownie would be too sludgy in the middle but have you considered a chocolate Guiness cake - it’s a Nigella recipe and a really moist, thick delicious cake.

funmummy48 · 25/09/2018 19:25

That sounds delicious....how long do you bake it for...and what size tin(s) please?

winewolfhowls · 25/09/2018 19:26

Thanks, I think I shall enjoy trying these out, my dp will be a most willing Guinea pig.

As for shape, I'm not sure, I'm not a very good baker. It generally looks like crap but tastes OK though I would like to improve on this.

I have both round and square cake tins.

Whoops I cut the bottom off haha x

It’s always a hit at team meetings, and it’s really easy.

Does the cake taste like actual Guinness though? I'm not keen on it

Just make brownies and layer them with chocolate ganache.

If you make one layer as thick as a typical cake they'd be under baked if you put it in for the specified time. If you put it in for longer you risk overbaking/burning.

Alternatively, I use a delicious chocolate cake recipe. It's my go-to for all birthdays.

Kelsooo that sounds great. And about my level of ability.

I think I am the reincarnation of a 1940s housewife, I can do stodgy puddings and Victoria sponges but nothing pretty.

Is it a general rule that if you cook cake for longer at a lower temp it will be more moist?

Nigella's old fashioned chocolate cake is amazing.

WaffleFroggy · 25/09/2018 19:31

Guiness cake doesn’t taste like Guiness, it just gives it a richer flavour and counteracts some of the sweetness. Getting a real craving now..

redsummershoes · 25/09/2018 19:34

a devils food cake? sort of fudgey but holds well if you want to sculpt with it

EqualityofDiscontent · 25/09/2018 19:40

looks like this, I'm not a great cake maker, have to go for the simple option!

EqualityofDiscontent · 25/09/2018 19:41

Angry try again. Looks like this:

I like the smartie flowers around the candles, I'm nicking that idea!

Keep some spare for the kids who get the slices in between the flowers! They count how many each other get

IStillMissBlockbuster · 25/09/2018 20:23

This is the best Chocolate cake recipe in the world It's Chocolate fudge, and it is quite brownie like in texture. As it has oil and yoghurt in it, it is never dry. Love it.

This is really a big chocolate brownie.

I use it for special occasions.

reallybadidea · 25/09/2018 20:51

I was just coming on to say Chocolate Guineas Cake. I made one today and it was very brownie-like. You can't taste the guiness, it's just very rich.

This one is amazing. Never failed me.

winewolfhowls · 25/09/2018 21:22

Aargh which ones to try?! Thanks everyone for the recipes.

Just make shallow brownie-cakes and layer them, I bake all cakes in individual layers rather than baking a deeper cake that's at higher risk of sinking and having to split it after. Two layers of brownies with icing filling sounds amazing Grin

lecossaise · 25/09/2018 23:28

James Martin's chocolate cola (not a typo, same effect as Guinness for a super moist cake) cake is divine and incredibly easy.
