If I liked the Great East Window at York Minster, what else will I like?

Saw it for the first time in years on Sunday. Amazing. What a wonderful thing it is. Descriptive powers not my forté tonight but it’s big and beautiful and impressive.

What other architectural masterpieces in the UK do I need to see or revisit please. I want to make a list.

The two cathedrals in Liverpool. They are stunning.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 25/09/2018 19:07

Salisbury cathedral is apparently quite impressive. A spire of over 123m Grin

ScribblyGum · 25/09/2018 19:08

Ive been to Liverpool loads but never inside either of the cathedrals. Right, they’re on the list.

Grin at Penguin

Durham Cathedral has some very impressive stained glass windows.

LIZS · 25/09/2018 19:12

Canterbury Cathedral, St Pauls, ceiling of Banqueting House in Whitehall

ScreamingValenta · 25/09/2018 19:14

Tewkesbury Abbey is wonderful and has a fascinating history.

ScribblyGum · 25/09/2018 19:15

Durham cathedral has got good columns too iirc (again an absolute age since I’ve been).

Off to google banqueting house ceiling...

Chartres cathedral, if you ever go to northern France.

Sprig1 · 25/09/2018 19:22

Salisbury cathedral. You can do a spire tour which is brilliant. It goes behind the scenes and almost all the way to the top of the tour. From memory it takes 2hrs and is about £10.

Lemond1fficult · 25/09/2018 19:25

Coventry cathedral is gorgeous - modern but beautiful stained glass and tapestry.

fireplacetiles · 25/09/2018 19:31

The Prisoner of Conscience window in Salisbury Cathedral is the most beautiful window I have ever seen, actually made me tear up it was so lovely! So that would be my recommendation😉

gobbin · 25/09/2018 19:38

The West Window at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is stupendous. I can gaze at it for ages and still not see everything. It contains the creation story. Much other good glass there too.I also like to stand in the lower section and look up. The pillars are simple and elegant and just disappear to nothing.

I’m a bellringer and have had the privilege of going up the tower many times. It requires two lifts to get up there. Bearing in mind that Liverpool bells are the heaviest ring (for bellringers) in the world, you could fit 3 double decker buses in between the bells themselves and the tower walls. It is just huge.

I was impressed by Lincoln Cathedral recently, some colourful glass there too. I also like the medieval floor cleared of chairs so you get a proper sense of space and proportion. Lovely building.

toomuchsplother · 25/09/2018 20:12

Lincoln Cathedral is stunning. Peterborough Cathedral is lovely too. Katherine of Aragon is buried there and Mary Queen of Scots was until James 1 had her moved !

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 25/09/2018 20:16

Canterbury Cathedral, and St George's in Windsor.
Oddly, I prefer Westminster Abbey to St Paul's. I think it's the big open space in St Paul's that makes it seem cold to me.

I could wander round lovely buildings all day long.

ScribblyGum · 25/09/2018 20:22

gobbin how wonderful, and how lucky to have seen that perspective of space in the Anglican cathedral.

Am making notes here. Have wanted to visit Coventry since reading The Tidal Zone last year.

Salisbury and Lincoln on the list. Is there a book of an architecture novice visiting all these buildings?

Winchester Cathedral is utterly stunning.

I love cathedrals!

Elderflower14 · 25/09/2018 20:26

A small but fascinating & beautiful church ⛪ here
Lawrence of Arabia's funeral was held there and he is buried in the cemetery across the road......

Elderflower14 · 25/09/2018 20:27

Oh and Wells Cathedral is lovely too!

Raspberry88 · 25/09/2018 20:29

Also loved Salisbury Cathedral. Beverley Minster is gorgeous as is Beverley itself and I really liked Ripon Cathedral. Malvern Priory has fantastic stained glass too, both medieval and modern.

carrie74 · 25/09/2018 20:43

My mum's a massive architectural history buff, so it wouldn't cross my mind NOT to visit a cathedral wherever I am Grin. I've been ragged around tonnes of them, and they're all very impressive in their own way.

Norte Dame in Paris is rather impressive, rose window-wise.

La Sagrada Familia is amazing inside as the light moves through the windows.

And I think Westminster Abbey is incredible, there's so much history in such a (relatively) tiny space, it would be easy to spend all day and still not take everything in.

In terms of books, my mother always had Pevsner in the car, on hand for wherever we may stop. I've never seen so much pride in my mother's eyes as when I explained the concept of flying buttresses to another Grin

ScribblyGum · 25/09/2018 21:22

That’s a lovely memory carrie Smile

Wells Cathedral has a pretty impressive stained glass window. And a great clock.

Ginpuddles · 25/09/2018 21:39

St Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Newcastle is lovely, and has some wonderful modern stained glass in a building designed by Pugin.

Also the Hidden Gem Church in Manchester (another St Mary's I think).

And YY to Coventry Cathedral. A fantastic building.

HelenaJustina · 25/09/2018 21:41

Winchester is fabulous and has Jane Austen’s tomb

HelenaJustina · 25/09/2018 21:42

Posted too soon!
It’s not a city I knew until a friend went to university there. Had an amazing weekend wandering round. Sooo much history there.
