Damage to windscreen - where do we stand?

Can anyone help?

Earlier this afternoon, my husband was travelling on the M1 behind a concrete mixer truck. Some debris came flying off the truck and hit his van windscreen, causing a crack.

He used his handsfree set up to call the number advertised on the truck and told them what happened, they asked him to film it, which he couldn’t as he was driving along alone, but he gave them the Reg as he was still behind the vehicle. The man on the end of the phone then hung up on him. Of course, he can’t remember the reg now as he couldn’t write it down and it seems like the company aren’t going to take any responsibility for this.

Do we have any leg to stand on with this? We really could do without the cost of replacing the windscreen.

It’s so frustrating as he always has a coworker with him, but of course he’s on his own today so no spare hands to record or write down the registration.

I have emailed the company asking them to make contact with us, but also to inform them how dangerous it is to have debris flying off the lorry at high speed on the motorway, this could have been so much worse.

I had a windscreen badly cracked by debris falling off a truck. I was driving with the DC and didn't manage to get the details of the truck, so I just claimed on the insurance- windscreen cover meant it was £50 to replace and didn't affect the no claims. Frustrating.

If your DH drives a lot it's probably worth getting a dashcam.

Windscreen repairs usually don't affect no claims and the excess is lower, without the details is officiating to prove but you can report it to the police of you want.

Get a dash cam though, if anything like this happens again at least you have proof, I know it's a bit unhelpful given it's too late, but like I say, any possible future incidents are covered.

Thank you both. It’s good to know it’s not going to be as pricey to sort as I was expecting.

I think you’re right about a dash cam 😞

I would second what people here have said about dashcam and windscreen repairs not affecting no claims. The excess for a repair is usually around £25.

Also be careful when talking to your insurer about having a colleague in the passenger seat usually unless you are covered for business use!
