No brain signal from knee to foot on 17 month old...

Has anyone any experience of this?

Ds is 17 months and not walking. He is cruising around furniture but does not stand balanced on his own without holding onto anything.

Hes always been late on his gross motor skills, he didnt sit up until 9 months, didnt crawl or pull to a standing until 15 months etc..

As he wasnt pulling up at just turned 15 months the GP referred us to a paediatrician and he saw him last week. The paediatrician did some little tests on him with that hammer thing they hit you with and has said he hasnt the brain signal from his knee to his foot that will make him walk.

He has said he hopes he will be walking by christmas otherwise there may be an issue.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

So experience of precisely this issue, but we were given very grim prognoses for DC1 in the first two years - e.g. DC1 would not walk, DC1 would not be in any way independent . DC1 was extremely late with many milestones, but got there eventually. (E.g. didn't sit until nearly 2, didn't crawl properly until nearly 3!) DC1 is now a very active teenager if clumsy teenager who has defied all expectations.

The fact that your DS is cruising is brilliant. I appreciate this is very worrying for you, and that our experience is not everyone's, but it is not unique, either. 17 months is not desperately late to still be not walking. Fingers crossed for you that it will come and he will soon be walking unaided.

The Paed said the average to walk is between 12-15 months. He has started to climb on his toy box etc and can get himself off the sofa but not on it.

He looks around 22 months so people do seem very surprised that he cannot walk.

It is a concern as the paed has said that it could be a muscular issue

No experience of this sorry. But just wanted to echo pp in saying 17 months isn't that late to not be walking, especially if he is cruising. My friend's DD was nearly 2 by the time she walked (no other delays) and nearly immediately started running and climbing.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 27/09/2018 21:50

No this exactly but DD was a late developed. Rolled at 8 months, sat at 10 months, crawled at 15 months.

We told if she wasn’t walking by her 2nd birthday she’d never do it. To my relief she walked 3 weeks before her 2nd birthday even though every one said she’d never do it.

She’s 3 now and she’s still having some problems - doesn’t jump, can’t run very well as she has a wide gait, but she’s doing amazingly well.

I never thought she’d walk. I am still amazed now seeing her walk, I still can’t believe it.

Hope you get good news and a good outcome for your boy. And just because they said he won’t doesnt mean he won’t, he could defy the odds like my DD did.

My daughter didn't walk until 23 months but she had her sister running around for her

Leela2 · 27/09/2018 22:29

My eldest didn't walk til two weeks before 2nd birthday. She would cruise and hold on to people but not walk independently. Doctor noticed weird placement of her feet and sent for Xrays, which came back absolutely fine. Try not to worry too much yet.

My DS wasn’t even pulling himself up at that age, let alone cruising. I was really worried, he wouldn’t even attempt it.
Then one day he decided to just up and walk - he was a week shy of his second birthday.
