Moving house tips

3in4years · 25/09/2018 13:12

I last moved over 5 years ago as a FTB with no kids. Now we have 3dc under the age of 5 and I am on mat leave. We are in the process of buying and selling and the thought of packing/ moving is so overwhelming.
Any tips to make it easier?
Thanks

Get a removal firm in. Grin

Sleepthief · 25/09/2018 13:18

Yes. Get the packers in!

Pay for the packing service from a removal company. Definitely not 'man with a van.'

Absolutely! I am about to move on my own and am having removal chaps in to do the packing etc.

The worst bit for me is changing utilities/broadband/tv etc.

We have moved house a lot!
Be organised is my first tip.
Start packing away little things now so you're not leaving it until last minute. The more last minute you leave it, the more overwhelming it is and the more you just start throwing shit in boxes! Haha
Label label label..... everything! I actually write lists on the side of the boxes of what's in it rather than just writing 'kitchen'
Pack a holiday suitcase with essentials like school clothes, pjs etc. That will get you though the first days/week.
Also pack a box with kettle, loo roll etc in it so you can at least make a cuppa and have a pee. Especially if there's delays and you are still moving at stupid o clock in the day!
If you want to be really organised then batch cook! Nothing worse than having to start trying to find random spoons etc to make tea in a room full of boxes!
When you move don't just dump everything in the first room in the house to sort out later.... place things in relevant rooms, especially big furniture. Although I do usually nominate a room or the garage to dump any boxes that are unimportant or need to be in loft etc.
Get the kids minded! They unpack as fast as you pack, get under everyone's feet and they will unpack and trash your new house faster than you can move in to it! All those toys they haven't played with for months are the best ever!

I've moved a lot and always packed myself slowly over time. The advantage I find is that you realise certain things can be thrown out/given away etc and you're not taking all your crap to the new place!

Namechangers tips are all good. I do the same. I would add make sure all your bedding is to hand so you have somewhere to sleep that night and make the beds up first in the new place, before doing anything else. Then when you reach exhaustion your bed is all ready for you! I normally go for a takeaway on the first night to make things easy.

Do a checklist of all the things that need changing over and tick them off as you do them. I actually quite like moving, I enjoy getting the new place looking all nice!

I have moved 3 times in the past year and it has been hell!
personally I don't like the thoughts of someone else packing for me other than family etc because it just seems to be an intrusion of privacy.
I would say to book a van with removal guys that you know can be trusted. I last moved on the day that England were playing in the World Cup and my removal van man didn't show up because he got drunk in the pub and forgot!! It was the only day off work that we both had so we ended up roping in my mum and my brother and filling everyone's cars with as much stuff as we could! Next time I would definitely hire a known removal firm that are trustworthy and that do all of the heavy-lifting for you

Good luck!! (especially with 3 dc under 5!) Shock

I moved 5 times in 6 years (went into rentals between house being sold and new one being available) so came up with the following:

Book a removal firm.

Start packing the loft and garage up well in advance. Most people underestimate how much they store in those two 'rooms'. Be brutal about what you want/need to keep - I hope your OH isn't one of those like mine who absolutely HAD to keep 20 ceiling roses, 35 plugs and 4 jam jars full of assorted screws Grin.

When packing, make lists of the contents of the box and stick to the top with at least 4 pieces of sellotape! Use thick black marker pen to label box.

Use double walled cardboard cartons wherever possible - single walled ones are a pain. Get a tape dispenser and get decent brown parcel tape! Use plenty on the bottom of the boxes.

Assume boxes of fragile items will be dropped and wrap the contents in bubble wrap, not just tissue/paper.

Dont assume that the removal men/women will put the correct boxes in the correct room at your new house. Be prepared to stand on the doorstep directing pieces of furniture where you want them to go so you dont have to spend time and energy shifting them when others have gone.

Make sure you have clean bed sheets etc to hand so you can get kids beds done in the new place before anything else.

Finally, be prepared to make lots and lots of cups of strong tea (usually 2 sugars!) - the removal men/women will love you for it!

Good luck x

Moving soon with 4 Dc. No packers. Dont like idea of people touching my stuff and can't afford it!

hodgeheg92 · 25/09/2018 14:17

I had a spreadsheet and each room in the (new) house was given a number - for example 1 was living room - then I labelled each box with a big yellow label that said Room 1 Box #. Then on my spreadsheet I listed what was in each box.

I also stuck these yellow labels (just pieces of paper actually) onto the furniture and the doors of the new house so the removals men knew where to put everything and we weren't left shuffling furniture. They probably thought I was mad but everything went into the right room and even now my DH uses the spreadsheet (it's a Google sheets document that's saved to our shared Google drive) to find things in the boxes in the garage. They're boxes of his stuff so if they're still packed 2 years later then I don't get involved Grin

The box with kettle, tea etc is useful and the suitcase tip I didn't use but would do in the future.

A tip for the people who move into your place - put any manuals, local takeaway menus that you have etc into a plastic wallet and leave it somewhere for them to see. Our sellers did this and we still use the same wallet they left for storing instructions!
