Help me fill my reading list?

DH has given me a shiny new Kindle, a Kindle unlimited subscription, and an Amazon voucher so I'm on the hunt for some new books to read. I'm particularly after some historical fiction or even non-fiction so long as it's not dry. The fiction doesn't have to be particularly historically accurate because I usually read a non-fiction book and if I enjoy it I then follow it up with non-fiction books to find out the real story. I'm not fussed on any one era either so any and all please Smile

Have you read The Sunne in Splendour? I downloaded it after it was recommended on here and it was very enjoyable.

sparkysalmon · 24/09/2018 19:36

The gift and the promise by Sarah Pernell - historical but light and entertaining

NothingWithoutEffort · 24/09/2018 19:38

I am too flowery! What do you think about them? I'm struck by Maya's strength of character and her perseverance.

For historical fiction, what about the Matthew Shardlake series of Tudor era crime by CJ Sansome? Or 1930s writer Josephine Tey? I also enjoyed the books by Ariana Franklin (medieval crime) and was very sorry when she died a few years ago. Or you could go old style romantic fiction with Georgette Heyer.

I love Sharon Penman's Welsh Princes trilogy about the medieval princes of Gwynedd starting with Here Be Dragons. I also really enjoy her Queen's Man series, set in the time of Richard and John. Have you read the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters? Light historical fiction but plenty of interesting detail about the medieval period too.

It's not true 'historical fiction' but the St Mary's Chronicles by Jodi Taylor are sheer reading pleasure. It's all about history. Kind of. Grin
There are 13 books so far, I think.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 24/09/2018 20:07

Agree with The Chronicles of St Mary's - love 'em Grin

Best historical novel EVER is Katherine by Anya Seton. Beautiful book, engrossing story. The real history behind her is during a fascinating period and I just never get bored of reading it.

EwItsAHooman · 24/09/2018 20:46

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I'm downloading some samples Grin

Phillipa Gregory writes good historical fiction although rather fluffy. Conn Iggulden too. I love the song of achillies by Madeline miller.

MewithaC · 24/09/2018 20:46

Oh, and another! Non fiction - Bury my heart at wounded knee. Utterly tragic to read. And bizarre last one unless my bookshelf shouts anything else at me - Barbarian Days, a surfing autobiography. Didn't think it was my thing, but found it so interesting.

cannycat20 · 24/09/2018 22:59

If you enjoy historical, try: - Victoria Holt; Philippa Carr (same author but a lot more historical input, follows a family from the time of Elizabeth I to the end of WWII); Jean Plaidy (same author, much more historical fact disguised as biography); Dorothy Dunnett; Mary Stewart; Ken Follett; Edmund Rutherfurd; James Clavell - lots more suggestions at www.literature-map.com/victoria+holt.html which is also quite a fun site to just play with. I also enjoyed the books by Dinah Lampitt (a touch of the supernatural in these) and Barbara Erskine.

percypig · 24/09/2018 23:03

For v good historical non-fiction try ‘The Hare with the Amber Eye’ - Edmund De Waal, Fiction - The Watch House - Bernie McGill, The Second Mrs Hockaday - Susan Rivers, Homegoing - Yaa Gyasi,

Carolwithane · 24/09/2018 23:06

The Forsythe Saga or Sunset Song

RocketPockets · 24/09/2018 23:07

Fiction - life after life by kate Atkinson (I think)
I'm not a massive reader of historical fiction but I absolutely loved this book!

Junebug123 · 25/09/2018 09:38

Check out Sarah Waterman and Victoria Hislop
Have you read The Miniaturist?

Junebug123 · 25/09/2018 09:41

That should say Sarah Waters

Omeletteandbeans · 25/09/2018 09:46

Hilary Mantel - A Place of Greater Safety. Set during the French Revolution. I read it nearly 5 years ago and still think about it fairly regularly; it's a fantastic book and the characters really stuck with me.
