Ours has just gone up massively and I feel like it’s a huge amount - £215 per month - is this ridiculously high or about right?

Sounds really high, but it depends on the size if your house and how many people live in it. My house is a 3 bed semi, ludicrously thick walls = takes a lot to heat up. I'm paying £100 per month.

Skylucy · 24/09/2018 18:49

Surely it depends on the size/type of house, and location? I live in a small, old 3-bed terrace in the south-east and pay £87 a month. If your bills have gone up, do investigate switching. I highly recommend the Money Saving Expert comparison tool and Energy Club.

I’m in the North and we were in a standard 3 bed semi that we’ve just had a dormer loft conversion on so is now a 4 bed - the jump up in price just doesn’t seem proportionate tt is adding 1 more bedroom though Confused

I'm paying £102 electric and £54 gas for a 4 bed extended semi West Midlands which I think is steep

£15 a month for 2 adults 2 bedrooms with heating on a lot and lots of baths showers washing etc don't get how some companies get away with charging so much Shock we're with bulb

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 24/09/2018 18:54

£59 a month for a three bed house. Supplier is breeze. I also heartily recommend the mse cheap energy club. Link is here: www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub They monitor the market and let you know when you can get a better deal. And it's all completely free unlike the automated switching services that exist.

Serendipityme · 24/09/2018 18:58

We're in the North too and ours has just gone up from £135 to £202 a month for gas and electricity. 3 adults and 1 teenager. 4 bed semi. It's soooo expensive. Going to look at alternatives. We're currently with Scottish Power.

AbiBranning · 24/09/2018 19:01

£88 3 bed semi and a hot tubBlush

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 24/09/2018 19:06

£148 per month but am over £500 in credit so should ring up and lower them. 3 adults, 2 kids in a large 4/5 bed detached plus I work from home so it's used 24/7.

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/09/2018 19:07

That's a lot for an average sized house. Average is about half that. Look at your tariff, insulation, boiler type and how much you have the heating on. Also tumble dryer usage and thirsty spotlights, fishtanks etc.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 24/09/2018 19:07

How long since you last switched supplier? I recently left Scottish Power for Avro and saved over £80 a month.

DonnaDarko · 24/09/2018 19:09

£126 , 3 bed semi. And this is based on our usage in the winter when the heating was on 24/7 during the snow. We're expecting to see a reduction soon for the summer months.

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 24/09/2018 19:11

Did it go up so much because you were underpaying, before and built up a debt? We had to overpay for about 6 months to get back to credit, now pay £85pm (3 bed semi).

almondsareforevermore · 24/09/2018 19:12

We’re with Bulb, who I trust rather than the crooks at Scottish Power, but paying £77 for gas and electric in a tiny draughty old terrace. It’s about to go up again and haven’t put ch on since April.

flopsyrabbit1 · 24/09/2018 19:14

£90 duel but thats paying more than i probably use,ive heard a few people say their dd has gone up,maybe they are basing it on the Cold winter just gone as im sure we all used more then

flopsyrabbit1 · 24/09/2018 19:18

sorry 3 bed detached £90 a month

PattiStanger · 24/09/2018 19:19

You can't compare with what other people pay that won''t tell you anything. You need to look at your tariff and your useage and then go on all the comparison sites to see if you can reduce your tariff. Once you're on the best tariff you need to look at reducing your useage. Assuming yout meter isn't borken that's the only way to keep costs down

Onlytheyoungones · 24/09/2018 19:23

Are you on a standard variable tariff? If so and if you have the time and energy, you could probably find a better deal. Firstly instead of thinking about how much you pay each month, think about how much energy you use and what is the unit cost of that energy and what is the daily standard charge. It is effectively taking control from the energy companies. It takes a little work with a calculator and checking and recording meter readings but if you know how much energy you use, you can get a deal to ensure you are paying the least amount possible. Once you are doing this it is an annual process of getting the best deal. It could save you cash!

DevonshireCreamTea · 24/09/2018 19:24

Blimey that does sound steep! I'm using £100 pm atm in a 3 bed semi. On mat leave so at home 24/7 with constant washer/dryer and heating on about 4 hours of the day. I expect to use about £130 in the dead of winter. I'm on metres !
