Who should pick up the cat poo?

I live in a mid terrace house. Next door neighbour has 2 cats. There is a grassy stretch running in front of our row of 3 houses, with a path leading up to each front door. No fences or anything in between. Neighbours cats continually poo in front of my house on the grass. As soon as I pick one up it's replaced by another. I hate picking it up, it makes me feel nauseous hence the reason I don't have any pets. If they were my cats, I'd be picking it up if it was on my next door neighbours side. Who should be clearing this up? Do I just need to get over it and carry on picking it up or should neighbour be doing this?

Neighbour is particularly grotty and was leaving dog poo on her back patio for months at a time so between that & this, I've really had enough Angry

The person who decided to purchase an animal should be the one picking up the poop. However, she doesn’t sound like she’s particularly responsible in that area of pet ownership. If it makes you feel better my NDN collects up their dogs’ poop in nappy sacks and makes a little mountain of it in their garden.

How do you know it’s their cat? We have some animal that poos on our front lawn but no idea whose it is!
Can you put out a deterrent? Plant a stinky lavender bush? Put down the granules?

Just put pepper down deter the cats from going there they will move on

cats tend to go anywhere that is not their garden, you can buy some cat repellant and it should stop them using your garden as their toilet.

Hi there everyone,

We're moving this to AIBU at OP's request.

The neighbour doesn’t sound like they’re going to do anything about it so I guess it doesn’t really matter who should be sorting it. Have you spoken to the neighbour about it?

A quick google suggested this is a safe repellent: fetch.co.uk/get-off-dog-cat-repellent-crystals-460g-85580011?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIz8vks7PT3QIV7ZTtCh28cgyHEAQYBCABEgKpy_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

The owner doesn't have a legal responsibility to pick up cat shit because they're counted as semi-feral. That means they're free to shit wherever the fuck they like and the owners have absolutely no responsibility to do anything about it.

Solar-powered cat repellents are okay but a PITA to keep charged during the winter.

Lemon peel is okay but it's annoying that you have to pay for lemons each week just because someone else has a pet. I guess it's fine if you're regularly cooking with lemons anyway but I don't think most people do.

Pepper can also deter cats bit it doesn't last long and there can be serious problems if it gets in the animals eyes.

Short of sitting in your window poised with a water pistol, there's not much else you can do apart from work your way through these repellent methods and hope something sticks.

During a particularly awful period with my old NDNs, I used to pick up their cats' shit with doggy bags and hang them on the tree in their front yard.

I also kept a note of every single penny I spent on things to repel their cats from my garden.

The cat owner should. But they won’t.

Cindersdonegood · 24/09/2018 12:47

I'm a cat owner and would happily pick up after my cat as I think pet owners should. Unfortunately I don't always know about it as she roams due to her being an ex-feral farm kitten but every single time I have seen her I've picked it up. Thankfully she has started to use just my lawn so I hope it'll stay that way. I would also buy cat repellants for neighbours if they asked and fully support the use of a super soaker! (Providing it's to stop her messing, not just harmlessly going about her normal kitty day)
Try cat repellants. Maybe the neighbours cats will find a new place to shit, and if your neighbour is actually aware but doing sod all, make sure you return the poops back to her. Pop them over her fence or something.

The cat owner should pick up - how about getting a jar of cheapest type coffee you can making a strong jug (scoop and boiling water) in the morning pouring it on the grass outside - the coffee ground/granules will put cats off, it wont do them any harm and the coffee and water will be good for the soil underneath - however you shouldnt have to do this
