Dd1(16) is ambidextrous, it can be disconcerting when you see her drawing a picture with a pencil in both hands(one of her party tricks at school.is to draw hearts with each hand drawing one side)!

I understand that only about 1% of the population is truly ambidextrous and am wondering about other peoples' experiences.

Things we noticed with dd1:

can hit a ball with a bat equally well with either hand( made her popular in rounders as it confused fielding team.)
can use a knife and fork in either hand( it took her a while to remember how to lay the table)
can be typing on the computer with one hand while drawing with the other
will automatically start doing something with which ever hand is free
can colour in a picture with both hands at the same time( we first picked up on this at 6/7 as it's not unusual for young children to use either hand)

Wow interesting thread. I use both hands for different things - catch and throw with right hand, hold a racket in left. I can write legibly with both hands but prefer left and play instruments right handedly as wasn’t presented with an option as a child. I can kick equally well with both feet. I also have discalculia, no sense of direction (to a level that restricts where I can drive to or walk on my own) or location and have Ehlers Danlos lll (hypermobile type). I had no idea there was any link either.

I was when younger - I write with my left and used to be able to bat or play tennis with either. Now settled into mostly right handed except for writing and having problems with right handed scissors!

I was pratting arounf the other day and realised when air drumming that I was drumming right handed and left footed.

I've always wanted to learn to play drums properly, so when I finally get to start, it'll be interesting to see what I'm comfortable with.

I have ambidextrous traits - can write with both hands - but with sports and catches would favour right hand. Though as I age and physically write less and less that's changed to more and more either hand.

Don't have an issue with maths - do with mental arithmetic assume that's short term memory issues. I do have dyslexia and dyspraxia.

All my children have been late to pick dominate hands apparently – but have all settled on right hands though have had concerns about them having inherited my dyslexia and dyspraxia no diagnoses so far.

It's when you start swapping hands, you realise how subtly right-handed the world is (which is a very good reason to encourage lefties to at least try ..)

The killer for me was playing cards. Growing up we always had 4-spot (ambidextrous) Waddingtons. It was only when I went to use 2-spot (rh) cards, I realised I sort, fan and hold them left-handed. Which makes it really difficult.

Then there's knives ...

Computer mice are fun. I actually swap buttons, which meant no one could use my PC art work. (Also fun when you go for a technical interview and the machine is set up RH ...).

I use mouse LH, triggers RSI to use it RH.

dd had some problems with fine motor skills when younger( using scissors etc) and I wonder how much of that was due to hand confusion.
