How to keep viral infections and colds at bay?

Last autum/ winter l felt like my two children went from cold to viral infection to cold to viral infection and l felt like l was keeping the tissue business going single handily.

This year l decided no more so around May time l changed everyone’s diet to get loads of veg and started having More fruit and veg, cutting out a lot of processed food and in August l decided to give them multi vitamins as s little boost, after reading about them l am not entirely sure the actually do a lot. The do eat a very colourful diet so l am sure l am meeting their needs too.

What else can l do to prevent them picking up bugs, l feel like l am becoming a bit obsessed with hand washing so l don’t really need that advice. I’m stressing over the fact they might be becoming too clean as well and am l making them anxious over this.

Tutoring this makes me feel like l need to take a step back calm the f down because if the are going to get pick up a big, it’s really out of my control, isn’t it?

This is brought on by the waxin ds ears and blocked up nose today,it was like he was ozzing bodily fluid.

Share your tips or tell me to calm down, l thinking writing this has just pulled me back from the edge of a sleepless night.

It's really hard when they seem to be constantly poorly. Last year my youngest (now 14 months) just had cold after cold and when he's poorly he doesn't sleep AT ALL!! It was a really tough time.

I don't think there's much more you can do to be honest. You're giving them a healthy diet, they need fresh air too. I avoided playgroups and places where lots of children would be when my 3rd child was young over the winters, it really helped. This was obviously possible because she wasn't at school though.

I think your anxiety levels do sound a bit high about it all though in the nicest possible way. I'm not sure if that's something you could address yourself or whether you think a visit to the GP could help?

Totally get what you are saying we have winters like that too. I think you are right re the handwashing, and it really annoys me that the primary our lot are in don’t make the kids wash hands before dinner esp with winter vomiting bugs that hand el can’t kill. I wouldn’t go overboard with handwashing but I think after loo and before eating is totally normal and sensible.

How old are your kids? as ours had a lot more of this before like age 6. I think little ones are more susceptible.
Colourful diet I would deffo go for. We also eat meat and fish. I’m not sure how effective multi vits are but our doc recommends vitamin d for whole family daily.
You can’t avoid catching colds and flu but you can be healthy food wise and take basic hygiene precautions that may help a bit with prevention.

How old are they? We found giving Kindervital for Children made a big difference, but they need to be 3 plus.

I swear it gave my sons immune system a boost and has saved me sick days for him.

Ems137 l think my periods due and l’m a bit hormonal, l can’t tell because my periods are on shaky ground but l am not usually so anxious typing this out really gave me a grip, I am pleased to say.

They are 3 and 6 so dd goes to nursery and the other is in year 2, l work with the public so there’s nothing down for us. I am going to have the flu jab my 6 yo gets it at school l don’t really want my 3 yo to have it.

Thanks starfish l am going to look at kindervital.

I think children often have poor immune systems because there environment is too clean. My mum was an OCD cleaner type and my immune system was rubbish. It’s a bit better now I’ve worked as a nurse.
The only other thing I’d suggest is that they are diligent about hand washing.

Great, definitely have a look at it then. You want the fruity formula. Sometimes you can get it but 1 get 1 1/2 price from Holland and Barrett.

We originally gave it for calcium and my son doesn’t like much dairy, but it really helped him at nursery.

Otherwise you are doing the right things, there is nothing else you can do! Please don’t become too obsessive, the other poster is right that children in often in too clean an environment these days.
