What would you call this piece of furniture ?

And don't say 'hideous' Grin

It is similar to a dresser, but has cupboard and draw on the bottom section like a sideboard and book case on the top. So not actually a sideboard or a dresser but a bookcase cupboard thing. It's tall like a dresser but not as wide.
I've got one, and want another and have no idea what I should be searching for on FB selling pages Smile

Picture?

KlutzyDraconequus · 23/09/2018 11:33

I'd call it living room storage.. or Brian.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2018 11:34

Search for dresser bookcase.

MorningsEleven · 23/09/2018 11:35

I don't know but I could do with a couple.

PineappleExpress · 23/09/2018 11:36

Do you mean Welsh dresser?

What would you call this piece of furniture ?

Welsh dresser?

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 11:45

No it's nto a Welsh dresser - it doesn't have the cupboards at the top and it isn't as wide - and it isn't pine it's oak I think - dark wood anyway.

I'll try bookcase-dresser Showy, thanks Smile

They are useful because they fit into alcoves and you can get quite a lot of stuff and books in them.

They used to be called 'wall units' back in the days of MFI.

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 11:50

I think dresser bookcase is the right description - it is similar to this although mine has a drawer just above the cupboards and is darker wood and more old fashioned looking.

I would call it a bookshelf cabinet.

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 11:51

Oh and the bookcase on mine is set back so there is about a foot of cupboard top you can put your cuppa and your glasses on.

Back in the day, they were called wall units (Google vintage wall units for example). Dark wood may be teak as that was popular.

These days I'd probably say living room wall or storage unit (so as not to be confused with kitchen wall units).

None of those attributes are necessary to make a piece of furniture a Welsh dresser.

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 12:09

Hereatnumber7 - I didn't know that, I thought they had to be pine and really big - so I've learnt something Smile And better still I think you have it - I've googled dark oak welsh dresser and it's come up with some pieces very similar to mine. I should probably be displaying my non-existant plate collection in the top part, not books Grin

I just searched for bookshelves with cupboard storage underneath and noted that most people called them bookcase dresser type things. That's what I'd call them too. It's like when they taught chimps sign language and when they didn't know the word "ring", the chimps signed "finger bracelet" instead.

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 12:30

Grin that's what it's generally called in my house.

ChateauRouge · 23/09/2018 14:58

Chimps are pretty smart, aren't they? Grin

The picture by Pineapple above looks like a unit from Scar top Pine in Lancashire. Their website might have descriptions.

BringOnTheScience · 23/09/2018 15:14

Ikea Billy bookcase with doors on the bottom half?

What would you call this piece of furniture ?
GoldenRuby · 23/09/2018 17:18

Sound like what my parents used to call a 'tallboy'.

GoldenRuby · 23/09/2018 17:21

..(sorry pressed send too soon)..but when I google a tallboy just seems to have the drawers and not the shelves on top.

ALongHardWinter · 23/09/2018 18:20

Looks like a Welsh dresser to me.

CoffeeShortbread · 23/09/2018 18:24

If it has a cupboard on the bottom and the shelves are slightly set back from the top, I’d say it is a dresser. Just a small one. I’d probably go for dresser/display unit.

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 19:28

Thanks all - I think it is definitely a member of the dresser family -some sort of cousin that no one mentions Grin

I remeber when I bought it in a second hand furniture shop it was labelled 'Victorian' - Victorian what it didn;t say. I'm not convinced it is that old, looks a bit more like 1930's type of stuff. But it is a useful thing and I rather like it, it's been carted round several house moves and I nabbed it in the divorce division of spoils.

I think I used to own a tallboy Goldenruby - it wasn't as high as this dresser thing, it had two drawers on the bottom and a cupboard onn the top - I kept bed linen in it.

Definitely some sort of dresser, so useful. A tallboy is a tall (obvs) narrow chest of drawers.
