How much exercise do your DC get?

I thought we were pretty good. Generally don’t watch tv or have any consoles or a computer so not very sedentary at base. Then we usually are outside for most of the day at least one day of the weekend. Then the next day will do a morning out and maybe a more low key afternoon. DC swim once a week after school and PE at school and we walk everywhere. But they are not totally out of breath very often and I just read somewhere that they should have an hour of exercise a day (which I assume means getting the heart rate up properly). What do all your DC do?

For context in case it matters they are all primary age and vvv slim.

DS is 5, just started reception. He does swimming one evening and football the other as well a pe at school.

We walk to and from school as it's only a five minute walk.

Weekend days we have a lazy morning Saturday and afternoon is usually park with bike or scooter, soft play or similar.

Sunday's we either have a full day out or similar to Saturday's.

DS is 11. Walks to and from school every day (about 20 minutes each way), PE at school twice a week, 90 minutes of fencing two evenings a week, spends a fair bit of time on his phone/console but also spends loads of time out on his bike.

diavlo · 23/09/2018 15:47

Ds (15) 4-6 hours of athletics, 2 hours of football, 2-3 hours gym, 2-3 hours of GCSE PE
Dd (13) 3-4 hours athletics, 1 hour Netball, 1-2 hours core & conditioning at home

Age 6
I ensure that the walk (with me) around 1000 plus steps minimum per day on top of school. Swim x2 per week.
In the holidays I make sure it is around 5000 steps with me.
I am also quite pushy with the bike in our tiny garden too.
Basically anything that doesn’t involve a screen and I am happy!

girlalmighty · 23/09/2018 15:52

Age nine. He has football training one hour a week, mini games for two hours a week. Swimming lesson is half an hour. He walks to and From school (five mins). He plays 'out' with his friends in the street around three nights a week. Rest of the time he's kicking a ball about.
I feel he gets too much exercise tbh! He never sits down.

Mitsufishi · 23/09/2018 15:53

Sounds like mine aren’t getting anywhere near enough. How do you fit it all in!? Maybe I should be pushing for some organised sport on the weekend?

Dd1 goes to trampolining, gymnastics and horse riding each week. She also does PE at school and I try to take her swimming and we have a local adventure park each week.

Dd2 goes to 2 gymnastics classes, one sports games, trampolining and she also has PE at school and swimming lessons and swimming with me and the adventure park as a family

When I look at both my dd’s there isn’t an ounce of fat on them, both of them have a 6 pack and defined muscles. Unlike me who’s middle aged and over weight Confused

The have tv and kindle time most nights but it’s only as a wind down before bed.

Thebluedog · 23/09/2018 15:57

Oh and my youngest will also do a 4 mike walk with my dh and the dogs Saturday and Sunday

museumum · 23/09/2018 16:06

I’m not sure how “out of breath” they need to get. My ds isn’t out of breath swimming but as he can’t touch the bottom an hour of treading water would floor me so I count that. For kids maybe getting warm is a better than out of breath?

Ds runs around mad in the playing fields at after school club 3x a week, football once and swimming once.

There’s one day he gets only school playtimes and walking to/from school. And one day he’s out with the family walking or cycling for an hour or two (steady pace, not out of breath intensity).

JennyOnAPlate · 23/09/2018 16:11

My 10 year old dd walks a mile a day, does 2 hours of football and an hour of netball every week and rides her bike for an hour or so at the weekend.

The 8 year old also walks a mile a day, does an hour of football and 3 hours of dance a week. She will also be riding her bike/scooter at the weekend.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 23/09/2018 16:11

I'm not sure how you fit an hour a day in either, 12 yo dd walks to and from school, does pe and dance at school and tennis after school once a week and will sometimes do the parkrun on the wend, oh and horse riding once a week. That sounds a lot but doesn't equal an hour a day!!

aperolspritzplease · 23/09/2018 16:12

8 yo dts have

Pe at school
Football once a week - 40 mins
Ballet once a week - 30 mins
Swimming lesson - 30 mins
Recreational swimming - 60-90 mins
Walk the dog - 60 mins on Saturdays and sundays
Walk to and from school - 30 mins a day
Bike / scooter one or two weekend days

I think they get more out of breath by just playing in the garden and I certainly don't think it happens in PE which seems to be very lax and they don't do much at all.

fatpatsthong · 23/09/2018 16:16

2.5 hours ice skating, 1.5 hours roller rink, 30 minute swimming lesson 'formal exercise out of school a week.

2 * pe, swimming and by all accounts constant tag and monkey bars in school.

Walk or bike ride to school most days plus we tend to have pretty active Sundays with walks/scootering and just general physical play. DH is very active and they take after him a lot. DD2 especially is really sporty and tends to do well in most stuff she tries.

On the other hand, whilst tablet time is limited to a couple of hours on a Sunday morning usually, they are total tv addicts and can waste hours watching all kinds of crap.

I am the anti sporty so really try to encourage activity - am very aware teen girls often drop off these kind of things and that's only a few years away.

TantricTwist · 23/09/2018 16:32

My DD 11 and DS 12 walk half an hour to school and back a day so that's 5 hours a week already, they do PE twice a week at school, after school football and netball and then walk from lesson to lesson and up and down stairs all day getting to class so thats at least one and a half hours a day. They are both tall and slim. Neither do any sport at the weekends.

Trialsmum · 23/09/2018 17:14

Tons. A mile run everyday at school plus extra if they want. Football for an hour on Monday, karate for and hour on Tuesday, swimming on Wednesday (45mins-1 hour), karate on Thursday (1 hour) nothing on Friday, 3-8 hours of motorbike riding over the weekend ( sounds like the least physical but it’s actually the most!). He also rides his push bike to and from football and karate so an extra 15-20 mins or more as he likes to carry on riding around once he’s home. The rest of the time he just bounces around the living room...
