Is he really just misunderstood?

I do need to read the books. My youngest is loving the films - he's living for Saturday evenings at the moment - and wants the books so I thought I'd buy him the books for Christmas then I can borrow them.

Oh no, he’s not evil. He isn’t a particularly happy character and his life hasn’t panned out the way he hoped. But he is on the right side. The nasty act is essential for his cover.

If your only experience of snape is the films and this rhe first time you've watched the films then i understand you don't know.

But yes misunderstood, wait till you het to half blood prince and all will become clear.

You really need to read the books, and then once you've gotten to the big reveal at the end, read them again with the knowledge that he's a double agent. He's not evil, he's just unpleasant, and sarcastic, and god-forbid he doesn't like Harry (cause that's a crime) and Harry doesn't like him.

I don't even find him bullying to be honest, I had far worse teachers who genuinely bullied students. I don't find him obsessive about Lilly. For all intents and purposes it looks like he didn't even speak to her after 5th year. If I'd inadvertently gotten by childhood crush killed, I'd probably feel pretty fucking guilty and distraught over it. In fact, I have a friend who did just that, and he's been suicidal and had to receive loads of counseling. So just turning double agent and sarcastic asshole is pretty light fare.
