The railway museum
Castle museum
Walk on the walls
River cruise.

Gutso is a lovely restaurant.
We did the evening walk leaving from the Golden Fleece it doesn’t cover the ghosts of York but gives you an insight to it’s darker history. It was very interesting, but possibly wouldn’t be suitable if your kids are sensitive.

The chocolate story is interesting but you feel very rushed there like you're being pushed through ready for the next group (it's a guided thing). There wasn't enough time to look at everything and watch all the old chocolate ads that they have on a tv. It's still probably worth a look but frustrating if you like to take your time and pay attention to detail. We might go to the railway museum in half term. My brother lives in York so we go quite often.

FudgeyCookie · 23/09/2018 07:25

We are also going to York in half term, we are a railway family so the railway museum is a must for us and is the whole reason we booked a trip!

Looking at dates our half term seems to be the week before York's so hoping it won't be to busy..

HollyBollyBooBoo · 23/09/2018 07:32

Is it just me who thought the Jorvik centre was rubbish! Massively overpriced and over hyped.

theboxofdelights · 23/09/2018 07:58

I have always thought it was rubbish Holly, it opened when I was 15 and York was the place I went as a teenager on the bus on Saturdays.

Maybe I was never their target audience 😂 but I didn’t get the hype. It was simpler then as well, not as gimmicky or commercialised.

funmummy48 · 23/09/2018 14:13

I took my daughters to the Jorvik Viking Centre when they were younger and we were all underwhelmed by it. It seemed ridiculously expensive for what it was. We paid with Tesco Clubcard Vouchers and I still felt ripped off!

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2018 14:20

Everyone saying the Jorvik was rubbish - have you been since it re-opened after it was refurbished after the floods at the end of 2015?

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2018 14:22

Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington
Eden Camp
Treetop Nets
Train trip to Whitby.
The Solar System bike ride (if you have or hire bikes)

Hoozz · 23/09/2018 14:26

Sorry but Jorvic is hugely over rated IMO.
You asked for hidden gems? I recommend York Col War Bunker. It's run by British Heretage, modest entry fee and totally fascinating.

Lonecatwithkitten · 23/09/2018 14:29

@Hoozz I was just coming to suggest the Cold War Bunker too. Tours only which leave on the hour ( worth knowing so you don't turn up and have to wait for 50mins).

theboxofdelights · 23/09/2018 14:29

Yes BikeRunSki I have, with a friend and her smaller children earlier this year - still very underwhelming 30 odd years later.

BikeRunSki · 23/09/2018 17:54

Thanks boxofdelights, you’ve just saved me a lot of money!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 23/09/2018 19:11

Walk on the walls
Jorvik
Shambles
Minster
Railway museum great if it's raining, and free

Yes to warm clothes.
Lots of fab eateries in the centre, and some of the chains are in stunning buildings so worth a look? Ask/pizza express are two of my faves

IJustLostTheGame · 23/09/2018 20:04

York dungeons
Railway museum
Castle museum, there's a recreated Victorian town and it's amazing.
The city walls
Barley Hall
Walk around rowntree park, there's a skate park there too.

Glittertwins · 23/09/2018 20:07

The chocolate museum was very good.
Jorvik
Castle
Dungeons (take Merlin pass if you have them)

ifiwasabutterfly · 24/09/2018 17:56

Yes we went to Jorvik last year - glad we had discounted tickets it was dreadful!

ifiwasabutterfly · 24/09/2018 17:57

Sorry that was a reply to @BikeRunSki

BikeRunSki · 24/09/2018 18:05

Thanks @ifiwasabutterfly
