Anyone know the north Yorkshire coast?

We (both self employed) are planning a move to the north Yorkshire coast. We know Saltburn so were planning on heading there but I've now also seen that Marske looks nice - is it?

Anyone know anything about Redcar, Loftus or Brotton?

We don't live anywhere near at the moment so I'd really love some insight into any of these areas please so we don't end up travelling for viewings that are in horrid areas. We're going to spend some time there in a few weeks to scope it out for ourselves too but I think you often can't get a sense of the benefits or pitfalls of an area unless you've lived there. We like Northumberland too but it seems expensive.

Thanks so much for any help, I'm really excited and scared as it's a big move. Specific reason for moving to the north east but it's a bit outing, just saying that so it doesn't sound like we've put a pin in a map for no reason.

Loftus and Brotton are both fairly out in the sticks. Both tend to be 'born and bred here'.

Redcar is mixed, areas of real deprivation over looked by former industry. The town centre, whilst ok, isn't the best.

There is also New Markse and Guisborough that might fit the bill. A little further inland but still doable to the coast is Stokesley.

I don't know much about Markse. Saltburn has a nice beach, there is a Sainsburys and soon will be a direct train link to Manchester.

Thank you so much for the reply. I got the feeling that Redcar had areas of deprivation (based on the house prices and a visit there where the town centre and seafront felt a bit... sad).

Is there anywhere you'd avoid at all costs? We've stopped in Skinningrove and would probably avoid (I think?) though the beach there is amazing.

I've only visited north Yorkshire.

There is a BBC series on iPlayer at the moment about Redcar. Called the mighty Redcar.

Redcar.

Saltburn is lovely though.

roisin · 22/09/2018 14:31

How near to the actual coast do you want to be? Saltburn is nicer than Redcar! Maddie, Skelton...
Some lovely places further inland a bit: Stokesley, Guisborough, or smaller places like Great Ayton, Newton...

Greywind1523 · 22/09/2018 14:33

Brotton also has one side that is very deprived. I wouldn’t live there tbh.

Guisborough or Saltburn would be my choice around that area.

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 22/09/2018 14:38

Oh I'll look that up on iplayer, thank you! Great tip.

It sounds like Redcar is maybe one to avoid then. Pity as I can afford a bigger house there! Of course.

Thank you roisin I haven't heard of some of those places so I'll be having some fun on Rightmove with those! Ideally we do want to be in a seaside town but would consider inland a bit if it's not far to the coast.

Thanks for the info about Brotton, too. I vaguely remember driving through it but didn't get much impression. Loftus seemed ok but a bit nothingy - but the houses there are again cheaper, which makes me suspicious!

Redcar isn't nice.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 22/09/2018 14:46

I live in one of the previously mentioned smaller villages about 20 mins drive from redcar, and it's lovely. Brotton and loftus do tend to be born-and-bred areas and iv friends who live their who say they can't wait to leave. Saltburn over redcar anyday, guisborough is rather nice- not far from saltburn.

birdladyfromhomealone · 22/09/2018 14:49

My DH live in Marske its a small town with 1970 type houses on the outskirts, small high street of shops/pubs etc,
Its nice there and a good beach and walking distance to the woods.
I much prefer Saltburn though but its dearer.
Redcar is the pits but cheap for everyday shopping.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/09/2018 14:52

DSis recently retired to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and seems very happy.
The last cold winter was a bit of a shock, though. Cold winds off the North Sea.
Living “Daan Saaf” must have turned her soft!

birdladyfromhomealone · 22/09/2018 14:53

Our favourite house is for sale.
We always said one day we would like to own this house, The beach is just across the road and DH school next door.

I'm from Redcar. It has some really nice parts and the beach is brilliant. Don't write it off. I would avoid Skelton/Brotten.

Fergusmum · 22/09/2018 15:11

Great Ayton was / is a great weekend village. Lived there for 5 years. V v pretty village. Everything u might need is there in the village - the main city M'borough is not the nicest.

Anythingforacatslife · 22/09/2018 15:15

Both Marske and Saltburn are nice, I would live in either of them but then I’d be happy to live in Redcar too, there are lots of nice bits of the town and it has reasonably good public amenities.

ancientoak · 22/09/2018 15:16

It's GOT to be Saltburn. I lived there on and off for 30 years. Beautiful beach, improving shops. couple of really good cafes and a deli etc. Good leisure centre and an increasing number of activities. Quite a few FB pages with Saltburn in the title that you could check out.
Guisborough and the inland pretty villages are great but there's NO transport to speak of and you can get snowed in during a hard winter.

Redcar beach is nice if they could demolish the town. Don't touch Skelton, Brotton or Loftus with a bargepole if you're on a limited budget
See if you can get hold of a few copies of the local magazine "Talk of the Town" or find the page of Stuart Smith , the local independent councillor. Lots of info here.

Greenwomanofmay · 22/09/2018 15:23

I live reasonably close to the coast in North Yorkshire and staithes is a nice village with a good community, Whitby is nice but busy and more expensive. Growing up a spent a lot of time on the East Yorkshire coast and still frequently visit Bridlington and Filey. Just north of Bridlington are the villages of flamborough, bempton, sewerby plus a few other. There's plenty of public transport in Bridlington and plenty of shops and house prices are reasonable.
Hornsea and Withernsea are also nice towns but very remote.

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 22/09/2018 16:15

Thanks birdlady - it's good to hear that it's a nice area. We don't mind it being quiet as long as it's not quiet in the way that places are when industry has left and there's no employment, you know? 70s houses and strolling to the beach sounds right up our street, and that house is so nice - but sadly over budget for us!

Nice to see some alternative thoughts on Redcar. Any tips on what streets or areas to look at or avoid?

I'm also glad to see that our feeling of wanting to be in Saltburn isn't just a silly fancy but that it actually is one of the nicest places there! Thank you! Thanks ancientoak for all the great info!

Greenwoman lots of villages there I hadn't thought of so I'll investigate some of those too, thank you. I had looked at Whitby but as you say things seem to be a bit pricier there (lovely place though).

I’m curious if you made the move? We are considering the very same thing.....

DuggeesWoggle · 28/02/2019 18:52

Surely neither Saltburn, Redcar, Marske or Brotton are in North Yorkshire?! Bridlington is East Yorkshire. North Yorkshire stretches from roughly Staithes to Filey (although that might be E Yorks too) including Whitby, Scarborough, Sandsend, Robin Hoods Bay etc. Beautiful picturesque fishing villages, steep cliffs, sandy beaches and rockpools, traditional seaside towns (with fish & chips, donkey rides, amusements etc), and then just inland you have the North York Moors national park, Dalby Forest not far. National parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the North Yorkshire Moors and coast can push prices up a bit but probably still a lot cheaper than many areas of the south.

God's own country, can you tell it's my home county?!

VanillaSugarr · 28/02/2019 19:00

I thoroughly recommend the Raven Hall hotel at Ravenscar near Robin Hoods Bay. Stayed there twice and it was great both times.
