Dissolvable stitches (pictures) how long?

Have you ever had dissolvable stitches? If so, how long did they take to dissolve? I did have some a few years ago with my first c section but can't remember how long it took. These ones I have now have been in 9 days so far and the longer they're there the more sore the surrounding skin seems to be getting, I really don't want to have to get them out at the drs 🤢

Hi, I'm not medically trained in any way, but I had the same with some laparoscopy stitches, turned out they wernt dissolvable. I think dissolvable ones tend to be thinner and blue?

I'd go to your nurse, FWIW you hardly feel them coming out, no where near as bad as I had imagined!

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/09/2018 17:41

I had some a few years ago and it was about four weeks, I thought it was long but they weren't causing me and problems so I left them alone.

WheelyCote · 21/09/2018 17:45

If there dissolvable they can take weeksss to go. 9 days is no time. I'll add a few more ssss to weeksss :)

It wouldn't hurt to make an appointment with your GP practice nurse for a wound review and ask her thoughts on the type of stitches.
Hopefully whoever put them in has already sent a discharge letter to GP practice that the nurse will beable to see. At the very least she'll beable to contact the person who put them in to clarify.

They do look a little chunky to be dissolvable but you can never tell. Head to see the nurse

My dissolving stitches after childbirth took over a month - was so happy when the last ones came away! They were blue, but went white as they started to dissolve.

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/09/2018 17:50

Mine were definitely white and looked like yours.
It was 10 years ago if that makes a difference?

BaconHead · 21/09/2018 17:50

Ahh fab I thought it was only meant to be about a week so was worrying cos they're a bit sore, googled dissolvable stitches and found out they're made from animal intestines, yuk Envy

My dissolvable stitches were 90 day ones!!

Whatsthisbear · 21/09/2018 17:55

My laparoscopy ones took over two weeks before they started dissolving but even longer before they were finally all out.

Zillcat · 21/09/2018 20:52

I'm a nurse... they look ready to come out. They are red around the edges and dried up. You are at risk of infection leaving them in.
Depends where they are but general rule is 14 days maximum for non dissolvable one to stay in so I would be looking at getting an appointment early next week to have them looked at more closely.
Over the weekend have a shower or bath and give the edges a little pull, they may have dissolved inside and just need a helping hand.

Zillcat · 21/09/2018 20:54

Also sorry didn't scroll to final pic so now see where you're surgery was! Would still say no longer than 14 days before having it checked over.

BaconHead · 21/09/2018 21:05

Thanks Zillcat, will try that in the bath tomorrow and if no luck get an appointment soon and see what they say

Weeks after my c section I had a loop of stitch pop out of the middle of my incision, bleurgh! I felt like I was going to come all unsewed, which of course didn't happen, but after googling I found that the stitches need to be inside your body enough to dissolve or something? And that your body can push them out and then they get dry and don't dissolve.....I'd get them checked just to make sure.

HildaZelda · 21/09/2018 23:20

Just don't do what my MIL did once and try and pull them out with tweezers!

BaconHead · 27/09/2018 09:14

Is this infected? 🤢 Think a trip to the doctors tomorrow 😬

Ouch, that looks sore BaconHead but I wouldn't say infected. Give it a clean, regularly with warm salt water and cotton wool. Can you go to a chemist today and ask their advice?

BaconHead · 27/09/2018 11:35

Going to clean it with salt water when I get back from playgroup, if it's no better I'll see the GP tomorrow 🤢
