Help finding a house in Coventry please?

NC for this. DP and I both work in the south of Warwickshire but everything is too expensive for us there so we're looking to potentially buy in Coventry. Nuneaton and Bedworth seem more affordable but the commute would be longer and we prefer the city. I've been trying to do some reading on Coventry and there were previous threads on it but our budget isn't huge, not more than about 150-160K and it seems all the properties are in that price range aren't in great areas. I can handle a not so nice area but don't want anything horribly unsafe of course! The property below looks okay for example but is the area a total no go?

Have you visited Coventry first? I'd definitely do that - it's going to depend heavily on personal opinions about what is okay and what isn't!

Undercovermartyn · 21/09/2018 12:44

Yes @AnchorDownDeepBreath, I go there fairly often but don't know the suburbs too well as I'm mainly around the city centre when I go.

I wouldn't buy a house there!!! I know Coventry VERY well. What's your budget? How old are your children? What sort of house do you want?

WingingWonder · 21/09/2018 12:51

I’d avoid Cov and head to one of the outlying villages.
I’d probably buy a rough project in Kenilworth if I could though...

Undercovermartyn · 21/09/2018 12:52

No kids @BlueUggs. Budget is about 150-160K, could possibly push it to 180 at a stretch but would prefer not to. 2 bedrooms would be fine for us and ideally not too far from the city as I need access to public transport.

I'm not really a fan of villages @WingingWonder, we prefer the city Grin

Thanks @BlueUggs! That one in Radford looks very nice but wasn't sure of the area. It seems a lot of Coventry is actually a no go which makes it difficult!

I wouldn't go as far as to say no go, but there are certainly some areas best avoided! PM me if you need help. I love houses!! 👍🏻

newidentiy · 21/09/2018 16:05

I live in coventry.

Avoid the area that you originally posted about, it is not the best.

I personally think Coundon, Styvechale, Earlsdon are desirable areas.

As per blueuggs said Holbrooks and Radford are ok and in good catchment area.

Some areas are lovely and some should be avoided like the plague although Coventry is nowhere near as bad as some people seem to keep saying. As with everywhere there are nice and not so nice areas.

Undercovermartyn · 21/09/2018 16:17

Thank you @BlueUggs! Will definitely keep that in mind Grin

Thank you @newidentiy, I looked at Earlsdon and Coundon but they're a bit pricey for our budget unfortunately. A few popped up in Earlsdon but closer to Spon End which I hear is bad?

How about Keresley? I saw this house which looked quite decent.

That's not a bad area, just be prepared for parking issues as the road itself is very narrow!!

BlueUggs · 21/09/2018 16:23

Cedars Avenue, Coundon

Needs modernisation but in a nice area?

newidentiy · 21/09/2018 16:24

Keresley is ok

Spon End is not too bad I personally don't think. It is close to the town centre.

It is becoming quite developed now though there are a lot of student refurbs taking place and is very populated with student accomodation

Is wood end still a 'Thing' in Coventry?
I understand the Livvy pub went a long time ago? I lived in Bell Green for a while.. glad I left.

bobisbored · 21/09/2018 16:38

Klutzy, Wood End is still a thing! Not a place I'd like to live!

BlueUggs · 21/09/2018 16:38

Yes, Wood End/Bell Green/Hillfields and large parts of Foleshill best avoided....
Parts of Earlsdon (I've posted a couple of houses from the area) are ok although quite heavy on student lets.
Some parts of Radford/Holbrooks/Whitmore Park are fine.
