What should I read to know more about current affairs

This is inspired by a recent encounter on online dating. The guy was a idiot and a show off but he clearly knew a lot about history, current affairs and politics. I always thought I kept myself up to date with what's going on in the world but he made me feel quite stupid that my knowledge was quite superficial. For example, I know about Brexit but I couldn't debate the issues with anyone.

I love reading so I've decided to educate myself a bit more. But I've no idea where to start. I'm looking for inspiration. Books, blogs, websites - anything that I can read for around 20 minutes a day.

Tim Shipman's book Fall Out is brilliant and very easy to read. Tells about the lead up to the last General Election. His other book All Out War is about how Brexit came about.

I also have a subscription to The Spectator which is great for keeping abreast of the current issues and issues abroad, though it is right leaning.

And I always read the weekend newspapers.

Thanks.
Have ordered the Tim Shipman book from the library to collect tomorrow.

I usually read a paper at the weekend but sometimes I'd like a bit more depth than an article.
