I'm trying to get Ds11 to eat healthily. Wi5h this in mind, I hoped to swap beef mince, for a veggie substitute. Can anyone recommend one? Is the taste difference really noticeable? Tia

How is veggie mince healthier than a lean steak mince? quorn mince, turkey mince, pork mince?

PippilottaLongstocking · 20/09/2018 13:35

Quorn mince is veggie and tastes fine to me but I’ve been veggie for over 19 years so no idea what meat mince tastes like any more!

Sainsbury's veggie mince is the best I've ever tried. Very tasty. Better than Quorn, IMHO.

Thank you

And it's vegan!

ToadOfSadness · 20/09/2018 15:57

I use Quorn mince, or failing that, whatever I can find. I know that it will need flavourings to make it edible so it doesn't really matter which one.

Bear in mind that most are soya based and Quorn is a fungus, the soya based ones I have used usually have more added flavour. Quorn is mostly tasteless and can turn to mush if you over cook it.

Nissemand · 20/09/2018 16:01

We just use chopped or grated root veg, along with peppers and lentils.

It isn't always meat free though, sometimes we use diced or minced meat as well, which is perfectly healthy.

More so than quorn and processed stuff probably.

happinessiseggshaped · 20/09/2018 16:44

I think Quorn etc is low fat, its not necessarily 'more healthy' as its heavily processed. I would swap half the meat for veg or beans or lentils or something if you really want to be 'healthy'.

justpoppingby · 20/09/2018 16:46

Another note for Sainsburys own brand meat free mince from me.

UniversalTruth · 20/09/2018 16:47

This wouldn't be my first switch when trying to eat healthily. What else are you switching? To answer the question, I would use 50:50 meat mince to red lentils.

CherryBlossom23 · 20/09/2018 16:48

Be careful with Quorn, some people get a bad allergic reaction to it that makes you feel very sick.

FrederickCreeding · 20/09/2018 16:52

I like Fry's veggie mince.
Not really a fan of quorn.

Feel I need to try Sainsbury's mince now too though, don't think I've had that one before.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/09/2018 16:56

Swap mince for lentils if trying to be healthier. Lentil Bolognese is delicious.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/09/2018 16:57

I saw yesterday that Sainsburys do mushroom mince, basically v finely chopped mushrooms.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/09/2018 17:00

I have the quorn reaction, it's like colonic irrigation and not fun.

Hoozz · 20/09/2018 17:07

I don't see why you think veggie mince is healthier than meat? Meat substitutes are very processed.
Having said that I have one veggie DC so in order to keep meals as simple as possible we do eat veggie as a family quite often. I use veggie mince for Bolognese, chilli etc. We all prefer soya mince to Quorn. You need to add lots of extra seasoning and spices as it doesn't taste of much. Have tried using lentils and no-one liked it.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 20/09/2018 17:13

Quorn mince - I wouldn't as it's common to have the runs after eating it. Last time (and it was the last time) I cooked with it poor DS had a day off school exploding from both ends. I Googled it and read quite a few reports of the same issue on sports websites.
