Yumbox. Worth the money?

For a pre school age child? Just packing ds lunch bag. He has an insulated lunch bag. I end up using either lots of cling film or lots of small containers. The yum box looks great but just wondering if it will be big enough and can you really put "loose" yogurt in?

Yes you really can put loose yoghurt in! We have had them for over a year and no leaks ever. No need to wrap anything, they really are amazing! My pre schooler loves the little compartments and it holds the right amount of food. Only thing is we wash ours by hand as I am worried the rubber seal might perish in the dishwasher

We had one. Leaked badly within a month. Company sent a replacement and the same thing happened.

Oh so two completely opposing views! Anyone else?

I hadn't heard of Yumbox before I opened this thread - just had a look on Amazon. They are very cute - totally see the appeal! But quite pricey.

We use Tupperware by "lock & lock". We eat a lot of homemade soups etc and it never ever leaks. And the children all seem to manage the opening / closing without any difficulty. Not as visually appealing as the Yumbox but they work well and wash well and don't break the bank if they are left in the playground.

I really, really like the yumbox.
I've never put loose yoghurt in it though... my kids don't like a lot of yoghurt.

The different compartments are great. You can put little bits of leftovers, a biscuit, chopped up fruit, mini meat pie, etc in, shut the lid and it all stays fresh and separate. The pictures under the compartments help 'remind' you of healthy eating, although I often pack 'protein' with things like choc biscuits!

My youngest is now 8, and he is using his elder brother's yumbox. I think we've had it for 5 years. My older kids need more food than our (toddler size) yumboxes hold, so they have a selection of other boxes.
For younger children (or for older ones who like to pick from a selection of healthy / leftover food) the yumbox is great.

My nearly 3 year old loves hers and I was surprised at the things she will eat out of it that she wouldn’t entertain otherwise. Haven’t had any yoghurt leaks but did find a particularly overripe kiwi caused a bit of juice leakage - most probably because I overfilled anther section with crisps and it wasn’t quite sealed as well as it could have been. But 99% reliable other than that!

Worth mentioning if you collect a lot of nectar points and have it linked to your eBay I managed to turn my points into eBay vouchers and bought a brand new one through them. Made me feel less guilty about buying a £25 lunchbox!

I don't like the fact that you can't fit anything other than picky food in it. No room for a sandwich or wrap.

DangerousMouse · 20/09/2018 13:47

Nottalotta my son used his at pre-school, it didn't leak, but we only hand washed it also. It was great to keep things separate. He's at school now and needs a bigger lunch box, would you like it? Happy to post it to you. PM me if you'd like it.

bobkate · 20/09/2018 13:48

Ours have been great. First ones lasted over 2 years, got another set now. Loose yoghurt, humous, all ok. I can fit thin bagels in and sandwiches in our one.

namechangedcausebored · 20/09/2018 13:52

Used one for 2 years with my daughter for years 3&4, then sold it on eBay 😆
Yes, it’s good and it doesn’t leak, but I found it didn’t hold enough food for her lunch as she got older. Perfect for the age you’re child is though.

I put tinned pineapple in my DS’s yumbox and the little bit of juice in it spilled out into the rest of his food. I wouldn’t trust yoghurt.

The other day he left his sliced apple in there so I ate some when I picked him up and it tasted of silicone, you know, that gross plastic taste. I’m worried it will turn him off some healthy foods.

Aside from the above I do like it. I have just started putting his in the dishwasher because with handwashing it started to retain a fruity smell in the silicone. Instructions say dishwasher is ok though it won’t last as long, but my house can’t function without the dishwasher so yumbox can suffer.

No room for a sandwich or wrap.

They have them in different sizes and DS’s has space for a sandwich plus 3 compartments for snacks.

Ultimately I love the design but I think I will shop around for another bento box that is really dishwasher safe but that hasn’t got gross-tasting silicone.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat Ah I see! I saw my nephew's at the weekend and it had lots of little compartments but no large area.

@DangerousMouse what a lovely offer,thank you! I will p.m.

Thanks for all the opinions. Ds is only 3 and takes little bits to school for lunch, I think the size will be fine. I've seen mini sliced wraps, breadsticks etc. I think I'll avoid loose yogurt but hope he'll love it otherwise.

Oh and I don't have a dishwasher!
