Am I allowed in install spotlights myself?

I have a single light in my kitchen, a standard downlight.

In the winter it's so dark, and because it's in the middle of the room when I cook I cast a shadow on the oven and I can barely see a thing.

I want to buy some spotlights.

I just asked an electrician for a quote on fitting 4 to 6 spotlights and he said 200-250 quid.

I cannot afford that.

Is installing lights something you have to have a certified person do??

My ExH is very handy and I think he could do it but is he legally allowed or do I have to have a certified person do it?

Recessed spotlights in a kitchen will need tools to fit which will cost if doing once (circular holes in ceiling aren't easy). Would consider under counter lights (which can be easy to fit) or a different light on the same fitting - we have a long bar with 4 lights from a single ceiling hole...

The bar would have to be pretty long for it to rest over the oven which is what I really want. But that might be an idea!

Also under counter lights wouldn't help with the stove being lighted.

My parents have just fitted a new LED strip light - like the old fluorescent tube lights. They don't look so bad these days. It only has 3 wires so was easy to fit.

It's a pretty big job and electrics are not something to piss about with if you don't know what you're doing. An electrician would typically charge £60 for one light fitting so £250 for six is a good deal.

The cost of tools and cables to complete the job would be fairly significant and only justifiable if you'd use them in future.

The easiest and cheapeast option would be to get LED lighting strips from Ikea that can be plugged in and mount them under units or wherever you need them.

Sorry if I'm raining on your parade, my husband is a qualified electrician and I know seemingly small jobs can actually be quite tricky.

I saw some LED lights in Dunelm that are battery powered that you can adhere to the underside of your cabinets. Think it was a pack of 6 lights for about £20, maybe £30. You could always try these in the short term?

We have led strips under the wall units, they light up the work surface a treat.
I bought them in Lidl last year.
