Any Vicars who can help me? Which bible version to take reading from?

I'm doing a reading at a funeral, we have chosen which one (john 6, 51:58) but i want to type it out and print it with larger font so i can read it clearly. What version should i use? (i'm in Wales) and where online is the best place to find it?

also do i need to do the 'the reading is taken from' and 'this is the word of the Lord' bit or is this not needed at a funeral?

Thanks

I am not a vicar, but my mum is (although in England not Wales) so I just asked her advice:

BibleGateway.com is a good resource which you can copy + paste from.
'Contemporary English' is the simplest version in English, and the NIV is a more traditional version.

"This is the word of the lord" not necessary at a funeral. You would normally give the book and the chapter, e.g. "from John Chapter 6".

She also says your vicar ought to be advising/guiding you with this!

Definitely Bible gateway.
It is very easy there to change translation and see which one you like best.
I tend to use new International version at funerals, but sometimes good news translation or new standard revised version.

Sorry forgot to answer your other questions
I would tend at funerals to say our reading is from the book of John but not say chapter and verse, and I don't say this is the word of the lord at the end as so few people know how to respond.
(I'm a church in Wales vicar)

Go to biblegateway and pick the version you feel most comfortable reading, it'll likely be NIV if you have been a church goer in the past (or currently are).

Not a vicar although I have a theology degree. I prefer the Revised Standard version for study but at a family funeral recently chose the Authorised version because of the beautiful language. Sorry for your loss.

I prefer the King James 6th version, but I'm a bit old fashioned wrt religion.

Vicar here.
When I’m taking a funeral, or any reading in church, I tend to use the NIV. When I’m reading at home I use the CEV.

I’d stick with an NIV reading so people can read it in pew bibles - most will be in that translation. You can also email the priest taking the service for advice about this too.

This has reminded me to specify the King James bible for my own funeral readings, when my time comes!
I can’t stand the dull prosaic modern translations, compared to the beauty and sheer poetry that sing from the pages in the AV.
I wouldn’t inflict the modern ones on my surviving family’s ears.

BrickByBrick · 19/09/2018 23:42

I think the New King James is good here.

Sorry for your loss.

thank you for your replies.

it seems then that there are several accepted options. i looked through them and have gone with the new revised standard as it seemed the easiest to read. I completely agree about the poetry of the authorised version but i was worried i would stumble over the words as i'm not sure how i will feel at the moment of doing it.

i will check with the vicar when we get there about the intro and the this is the word bit then. there are a lot of other stresses on the person organising the funeral so i didnt want to bother her with questions to ask the vicar.

i have printed the reading off from biblegateway as suggested.

Thank you for your help, just have to hope i can hold it together now.
