Sad news. He was 96. I used to love My Word on Radio 4 (long ago). I hadn't realised until I read the BBC obituary just now that he and Frank Muir were responsible for catchphrases I grew up with like 'trouble at t'mill', 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' and one of my absolute favourites which they agreed to let the Carry On crew use 'Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!'.

He always came across as a warm, clever but not arrogant person. I think I'd have enjoyed meeting him. RIP.

I only knew him from "It'll be alright on the night", with his famous clipboard!
He always came across as a great fun, good humoured man.
He reached a ripe old age!
RIP, Mr Norden.

There was a fantastic 3 hour special from about 10 years ago repeated recently on radio 4 extra with him talking about his life and playing clips and programmes. He’d done so much fascinating stuff.

DGRossetti · 19/09/2018 08:55

Oh dear ... another person I was slightly surprised to realise hadn't died a while ago Sad ...

RIP - always enjoyed his dry edge to life ...

ArtemisWeatherwax · 19/09/2018 08:58

I think Dennis Norden was the reason my dad bought our first ever VHS player. He'd record It'll Be Alright and fast forward through to the actual clips - that's all he ever did with it for years Grin

HappydaysArehere · 19/09/2018 09:04

Really liked him. He was a great script writer with Frank Muir. Didn’t he write “Take it From Here” which I loved as a child. (I am old). When it came on Joy Nichols would begin with”Oh! Ro-o-n” (Ron being Dick Bentley) as they sat on the sofa while courting. Jimmy Edwards was her dad. Loved it. He was very likeable and talented.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/09/2018 09:12

Loved Dennis Norden! I am so glad that he had such a long and apparently happy life.

He always seemed such a kind man and his humour was never cruel of vicious.

I wonder how many of today's comedy scriptwriters will be remembered so fondly.

(Happy - I loved that programme, too! Ron and Eth always made me laugh)

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 19/09/2018 09:24

Yes, they wrote The Glums. June Whitfield starred in that and is probably the last survivor now.

I hadn't realised those catchphrases his either.

twoshedsjackson · 19/09/2018 10:52

Sad news; a reminder of gentler times. I developed my longstanding love of puns and wordplay listening to "My Word", shaggy dog stories leading up to mangled versions of well-known sayings - "Be where the hide's off Marge" (how to prevent the sight of a rather plump ornithologist scaring away timid birds) from "Beware the Ides of March!", and my fondness for acquiring new vocabulary (on another thread, thanks to Mumsnet for "epicaricy"")

Ngaio2 · 19/09/2018 11:05

My love of the English language and appreciation of this very English humour was fostered by this wonderful duo. Always thought that what a wonderful dinner party it would be with these two as guests.

Bloodybridget · 19/09/2018 11:29

twosheds I remember another of those stories on My Word that ended "on 'is walk 'e merely pants" (Honi soit qui mal y pense). A long life, hope it was a happy one.

FoulMouthedMotherFigure · 19/09/2018 14:26

Very sad news. Sad But, to give Denis a fitting My Word epitaph:

"And so he passed Dover, and all the strumpets undid on the other side."

(And so he passed over, and all the trumpets sounded on the other side.)

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 19/09/2018 14:36

Grin for all the word play here! I love puns and shaggy dog stories so that part of My Word was great fun. He was on My Music too, which I remember less well.

Ah bless him. A lovely man. RIP

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/09/2018 15:55

twosheds

And the eskimo who accidentally set fire to his craft - "You can't have your kayak and heat it, too."

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/09/2018 15:56

Thank you Tiger

A fitting epitaph indeed.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/09/2018 15:57

Sorry 0 Thank you Foulmouth*

UnlikelyMary · 19/09/2018 18:17

Ah lovely Dennis Norden.
Anyone wishing to learn a lot about his early time in show biz should read Frank Muir's autobiography A Kentish Lad. Its wonderful.
I remember My Music. There is nothing quite like that on tv these days!

TheQueef · 19/09/2018 18:19

Fond memories of always laughing with Dennis. RiP.

daisychain01 · 20/09/2018 03:35

RIP Dennis Flowers

Lovely clip of him on the radio yesterday, again befitting of "It'll be Alright in the Night" saying

"Satellite, that wonderful invention that enables a mistake to be beamed round to 96 different countries simultaneously"

What a clever, witting and talented man who's humour was gentle and charming, never unkind

daisychain01 · 20/09/2018 03:36

whose humour

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 20/09/2018 03:55

I liked "Welcome to another 'Gathering of the Clangs'" when he introduced one of the episodes of IBAOTN
