Pain when touching back but not actual back pain?

Does that make any sense? I have ongoing pain in my back right where my waist goes in and its right at the spine and directly under the ribs. It flares up very often and just touching it causes a lot of pain. BUT I don't have a sore back as such. I can move/bend etc with no pain at all, it's only when touching and there will be a general throbbing of it while it's flared up but not agony, the real pain comes if anyone even touches it and agony if anyone presses it (DP gave me a hug one day and squeezed me a little and I almost hit the roof). I've seen the GP a few times who suggests ibuprofen and says he will send for a scan (MRI/xray, I've no idea which) if it continues but I've been in 3 times in the past few months and he says the same but hasn't referred me yet.

Any ideas on what it could be? It's driving me mad today and even if I gently move my hand over the area it causes a lot of pain.

Have you ever had shingles? This sort of pain can persist post shingles - post herpatic neuralgia

No, never had shingles before. Would there be a rash if it was shingles?

Sounds a bit like gallstones to me?

There is usually a rash with shingles but it is not always identified as shingles at the time. Have you ever had chicken pox? You can't have shingles without having had chicken pox at some stage before (often in childhood).
If you think that's what might be causing this then there are different painkillers available which work more effectively on this rather unusual pain

Is the pain on one side or both?

HolyFuckNuggets · 18/09/2018 19:08

Only on the right hand side. Have had CP as a child, yes.

@AliBingo I had an abdominal scan for gallstones last year during which time the back pain was on and off. All clear at the time but I do have a lot of abdominal pain in the right side but not agony like I assume gallstones would be.
