What makes you proud to be British?

A friend and I were talking about coming home from holiday and appreciating the UK 'anew' after being in other cultures. One thing she said was "we are so *tolerant". It gave me a warm fuzzy glow. I think that's really something to be proud of.

i recognise some posters may disagree but I am thinking in broad terms and historically etc etc...
Don't mean to start a 'heavy' thread, just a place to share other warm fuzzy things. Brew

@Bombardier25966

I mean I've never seen a homeless disabled person on the street .

tierraJ · 18/09/2018 19:10

Got asked today how British I am as I have a foreign sounding surname.

So I said I traced my surname back to sixteenth century immigrants on Ancestry.com.

Got some funny looks.

Decided not to discuss the more recent immigrants in the family.

Fuck Brexit & the racist attitudes that have risen to the surface, nothing to be proud of there.

Except any employer will have a duty to employ EU citizens first. Europe has several countries filled with highly skilled professionals. It will be nigh on impossible to get work in Europe if you're not part of it,same as it is in the US if you don't have a Green card. My dc and future generations have had their chances and work opportunities slashed. When you consider the finance, drugs, tech industries that are moving to Europe on top the picture is grim. And we did it to our dc. Sorry I don't feel proud at all.

Tolerance, a fair hearing, sincere manners, self deprecation, humour, honesty and integrity, universal healthcare, John Lewis, Waitrose, thank you wave from drivers when you let in other cars

P3onyPenny · 18/09/2018 19:31

But hey soon we'll be able to buy mis- shapen veg againHmm

WeLoveFlowers · 18/09/2018 19:32

And the Sunday Times and the Today Show on Radio 4, plus BBC documentaries- when they’re good they’re GOOD!

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 19:37

Good because we should be able to buy mis shaped veg! It's ridiculous that it's a small novelty box in the aisle, it should be the complete norm!

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 19:41

When foreign nationals work here, do we have a duty to employ EU citizens first over non EU citizens? Genuine question.

When I used to look through CVs, it didn't even occur to me what their nationality was. We employed someone from New Zealand because they had the relevant experience and I wouldn't have employed someone just because they were from within the EU.

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/09/2018 19:43

I guess... women aren't usually made to marry their rapists?

That and Yorkshire puddings.

WeLoveFlowers · 18/09/2018 19:44

Cider

There’s no duty. You just need to be sure they are legally allowed to work here, so it’s a no brainer with EU nationals. With a NZ employee you would need to check visa terms

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/09/2018 19:45

mylittlefony

Yes I have. Quite a few times. Poor fella was sat in his wheelchair, filthy and half starved.
Also seen a man with one leg huddled in a shop doorway.

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 19:48

He did have the correct Visa terms, it was checked and was not problem to do so.

So people can still work in the EU, they just need a visa. Yes it will be more faff but this whole catastrophic attitude that no one will ever be able to work in the EU within Europe again is silly!

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 19:51

We hire thousands of Asian nationals here every year so we can still hire European ones too.

Flexoset · 18/09/2018 20:00

That Trump balloon made me truly proud to be Britiah.

Flexoset · 18/09/2018 20:01

Oh and Boaty McBoatface, too.

Livinglavidal0ca · 18/09/2018 20:04

I like that British people unify with hate. We all hate the government. We hate summer. We hate winter. I feel like British people are a little group sometimes.

I know there's bad intolerant people in the country, but I like that if someone needs help we all get stuck in. Whether it's someone that's been made homeless and starting again on a Facebook page asking if anyone has any furniture they could have, or helping someone up who's fallen over, or holding doors open for one another.

geekaMaxima · 18/09/2018 20:06

When foreign nationals work here, do we have a duty to employ EU citizens first over non EU citizens? Genuine question.

Yes. You can only hire a non-EU national if there are no suitably appointable EU nationals. For highly skilled jobs (science, academia, medicine, etc.) it's common to be in that situation. For less skilled jobs, not so much.

geekaMaxima · 18/09/2018 20:08

... if there are no suitably appointable EU nationals that apply for the job, that is. It's no good if they only exist in theory!

claraschu · 18/09/2018 20:13

I am not British, but here are the things that make me wish I were:
Footpaths
the countryside in general
the NHS
your amazing literature
your incredibly versatile, expressive, and mongrel language
your architecture
your humour
your lack of jingoism (except for your deplorables)
your tolerance
Bendicks Bittermints and fruity malt loaf

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 20:20

Well maybe it will make it fairer for non EU nationals now they aren't sidelined in favour of EU nationals for the job..

P3onyPenny · 18/09/2018 20:24

Cider what was the job and visa?Hmm

Re the EU surely you'll only be allowed to apply for jobs on shortage lists and then companies will have to fill in relavent paperwork to show EU nationals couldn't fill it.

At the moment you could apply for anything and everything just as if the jobs were in the UK. That is a massive job market at our finger tips. Teens can go to any uni for free( so no debt). We are losing lots of jobs to Europe,on top of that we are to be excluded from most European jobs and our kids are completely shut off from free uni education. You may not think that is catastrophic but I do.

CiderBrains · 18/09/2018 20:31

Anyone would think there wasn't a world outside of the EU and anyone would think non EU nationals never worked in the UK or the rest of the EU!

P3onyPenny · 18/09/2018 20:34

There is but we can't work there.Have you tried getting work in the US or Australia? Plus they're miles away.

Europe is close, accessible and with a massive job market at our fingertips.

Thomasinaa · 18/09/2018 20:37

You don't get a fair hearing anymore. The government has made the justice system unaffordable to anyone who isn't rich.
