Is working out change in a shop becoming a dying art?

I admit I was very grumpy as I have a very bad cough so had to cancel my root canal treatment tomorrow (coughing with a mouthful of metal is not a good idea).

I popped to the chemist to get some cough medicine. It was £3.81 so I handed over a fiver. Person on till says "Oh we have run out of change again. I need more 2ps" and started to drift off to the back of the shop. So I said that I had the 81p to help out.

It was obvious that the till person had no idea what I was banging on about. No idea at all. Nada, nothing, zilch. The chemist did though so I went off with my £2 change while the first server was still looking for 2ps.

Is this a result of so few of us carrying cash for our purchases these days? Am I a dinosaur? I feel a bit sad that we may be losing a sort of useful skill.

I know if I'd paid by card this wouldn't have even been an issue

Some people would worry about getting it wrong and getting into trouble.
