We have visitors this week for lunch - what can I make that will be really nice and not too niche, but not look like I've tried too hard!???

Thank you!!

A nice Caesar Salad. Or get some savoury pastry cases, put some red onion marmalade and goats cheese on top. Or grill a horse.

Some tasty omelettes, variety of interesting ingredients so they could pick their own fillings?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 17/09/2018 19:50

Couple of nice cheeses, sliced nice meats and a butcher's pork pie with pickle.

A quiche and salad with new potatoes? I like buying all the little tubs of interesting salad to make it look fancy but it's v easy

Fresh bakery bread, nice cheese and meat platter and pork pies etc with some posh coleslaw and crisps? That’s my go lunch when the in laws visit. Means they can help themselves to the bits they like.

Onion tart tatin? Pretty simple to do but looks gorgeous. Serve with a big, simple green salad

PurpleDaisies · 17/09/2018 19:53

Puff pastry tarts are really easy to make but look impressive. I like pesto, goats cheese and thin slices of potato.

CherryPavlova · 17/09/2018 19:54

A home soup- carrot and coriander or mushroom maybe with mince bread.
A homemade quiche and salad or just an antipasti platter with salami, Parma ham, artichoke hearts. Olives, tomatoes mozzarella and rocket.
Ice cream if people want pudding.

CherryPavlova · 17/09/2018 19:54

Nice bread not mince bread! Mini figs in syrup with mascarapone are very easy pudding.

glagdy · 17/09/2018 19:56

Grill a horse?? Confused

flugelhorn81 · 17/09/2018 19:58

Came on to suggest puff pastry tarts like PP. I do one with slow-cooked red onions, cherry tomatoes and goats cheese with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, or sweet leeks with taleggio. You can basically pop anything on top of puff pastry and it looks and tastes good! Grin

Thank you! Some great ideas!
How do you do puff pastry tarts??

I was thinking bakery bread, sliced meats, some kind of pate, potato salad, posh crisps, salad? Or is that a bit of a mish mash!??

Warm butternut squash salad with crusty bread.

Salad made as follows: roast butternut squash with olive oil, cumin and optional chilli flakes.

Get rocket. Toast pine nuts. Shave Parmesan. Tear Parma ham.

Put rocket on plate. Add warm butternut squash. Arrange Parmesan and ham artfully. Sprinkle with pine nuts. Drizzle with balsamic. Happy days.

Oh and some little bits of halloumi in breadcrumbs with sweet chilli dipping sauce?

If it was a kids party I'd be fine 😂

This is the one I make. You could switch the fresh herbs for pesto to save time.

Some kind of spaghetti or linguine presented in a huge beautiful dish with a mozzarella, tomato and avocado side salad with fresh basil

Isentthesignal · 18/09/2018 08:23

Homemade soup - cauliflower with a drizzle of truffle oil. But most homemade soups with root veg, finished with a swirl of cream are lovely and so easy to make. Serve with good crusty bread and follow with a cheese board - keep it minimal, 3 cheese - a blue, a soft and a hard. Figs are in season and work very well with cheese and a drop of local honey, maybe add some Carrs Table water or Bath Olivers.

I love this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1129654/shallot-tarte-tatin-with-goats-cheese

Pretty straightforward and can be served with green salad etc
