Are you Generation X or a Millennial?

This is just for fun as I was reading something that caught my interest. Depending on what you read I could be classed as either, I suppose I'm a Xennial. According to Wikipedia, you're Generation X if you're a child of Thatcher, possibly a latch key kid, grew up with Friends, Nirvana, remember the fall of the Soviet Union. I think that's me. Apparently Gen X are more cynical while Millenials are more confident, more civic minded and better at collaboration but also more sheltered. I'd be interested to see if just being born 2/3 years later than me could really make that much difference? Surely someone born in 83 would also consider themselves a child of Thatcher's Britain, remember life before the internet etc?

I'm an xennial, I was just coming to inform you there was a middle ground! Grin

BeyondAnOmnishambles · 16/09/2018 22:52

(85)

KatyaZamolodchikova · 16/09/2018 22:55

I don’t know! I was born 87, but I don’t remember any of those things except Friends. But I also don’t really think I identify as a Millennial either. Maybe I’m an Xennial too?

twattymctwatterson · 16/09/2018 23:02

I think technically Millennials start from 82-84. I've read a few different opinions though!

I thought Millennials were born around the Millennial, so anyone from 2000 onwards?

Elephant14 · 16/09/2018 23:04

What about iGen?

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 16/09/2018 23:05

Generation X (born in 79). I’m a dreadful cynic so I guess I’m a classic genXer

What year do you need to be born in to be a Millennial?

BeyondAnOmnishambles · 16/09/2018 23:08

Millennials "came of age" around 2000. Depends on what you consider "coming of age", I guess? Grin

twattymctwatterson · 16/09/2018 23:09

MyBrexit sources differ but all agree that 83 onwards is Millenial 65-79/80/81 depending on who you ask is Gen X but 77-83 can also be considered Xennial. Definitely see myself as Gen X! Apparently Generation z is anyone born after 2004

Definite Gen X here (72).

But have a fair number of millenial friends.

Thing is cynicism tends to come with age/experience so makes sense to me that millenials aren't cynical...yet! I'm noticing the older ones are BECOMING more cynical.

But yea I'm definitely a child of thatcher (unfortunately), remember vividly how it felt being in the midst of the Cold War, remember Chernobyl and watching the somehow slow yet fast fall of soviet communism.

My mother (boomer) sobbed seeing the Berlin Wall coming down, she vividly remembers it going up, people being shot as they tried to climb over from east to west literally as it was being built! I remember her saying she believed it would fall, but didn't think it would happen in her lifetime.

I wonder what dds generation will be called, what will be their pivotal historic moments. She already doesn't remember a world pre-9/11 which I am acutely aware of if we watch certain films set on aeroplanes made pre-9/11.

LoveManyTrustfew · 16/09/2018 23:14

Je suis un Boomer...Grin

twattymctwatterson · 16/09/2018 23:15

It's mad to me that incidents as burned in my mind as Hillsborough, the BerlinWall coming down, The Dunblane Massacre, the signing of the Good Friday agreement aren't remembered by other adults who I don't really consider to be much younger than me (although that's probably because I can't accept that I'm nearly 40 and actually 29 year olds aren't my age)

Sorry LoveMy didn't mean to exclude you boomers! Wink

I'm a baby boomer. One of my DCs is genX and the other is a millennial.

formerbabe · 16/09/2018 23:18

1981...definitely generation x...am no way a millennial.

Muddlingalongalone · 16/09/2018 23:19

Xennial here - perfect mix😀

VickieCherry · 16/09/2018 23:19

Born in 81, definitely Gen X based on your description and my own reading. My partner was born in 82 and is the same.

twattymctwatterson · 16/09/2018 23:21

Why have I fallen down this Google rabbit hole at bedtime?

I'm technically a millennial (born 84) and DH is a GenXer (born in 80) and we really have had the exact same experiences I'd say. Of course there has to be a cut off point but find it fascinating that we fall into different categories. Guess it is as we both fall right on the cusp.

We were both at work the day of 9/11, both teenagers when Lady Di sadly passed away...both have grown into adults with mobile phones and Facebook and both went to school and when you had to call a landline to speak to our friends!

Starlive23 · 17/09/2018 03:44

Oh, forgive me I have just learned that we are both xennials! You learn something new every day!!

RedneckStumpy · 17/09/2018 03:47

I am a millennial just, (84) nut I definitely feel more Gen X

penisbeakers · 17/09/2018 04:15

100% Generation X.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 17/09/2018 04:22

Born in 1980 and I identify as xennial. The description has less to do with cynicism/world-view and more to do with how you adapted to technological advances. Xennial's didn't grow up with technology the way millennial's did but adapted to it quite easily because the internet/cell phone technology began to appear when they were still quite young (teenagers). Older Gen-X'ers struggle more with adapting to technology/technological trends like social media, smart tech, etc.

beingsunny · 17/09/2018 04:23

I'm apparently an 'elder Millenial' 😂
