Hip replacement recovery times

Second thread in one night, board bore...

My mother is having a hip replaced 30th Sep and a much loved member of the family is getting married 2 weeks later.

What are the chance she'll be able to travel?

Anyone with experience of the surgery themselves/a loved one have any thoughts?

She is 70 and as fit as a flea (save this!).

My Dad wouldn't have been comfortable going any sort of distance in a car just 2 weeks in (and he was a lot younger when he had it done).
The idea is they get people moving asap, but sitting in a car would be uncomfortable. When you say 'travel' - how long for?

Forgettheworld · 16/09/2018 21:20

Do you mean travel by car or plane etc? If it’s by plane not usually for 6 weeks, car would be fine if there’s plenty of stops.

CMOTDibbler · 16/09/2018 21:22

I don't think she'll be able to make the wedding, mainly as the amount of sitting would be too much. My very fit, 50 year old, friend had a hip replacement earlier in the year and it did take 6 weeks for her to be able to sit and work

MinecraftMother · 16/09/2018 21:22

So it would be from Home to the port (30 mins in car) and then the ferry. Then a car journey of about one hour the other side (Norn Iron).

Alternative is flying from Liverpool to Belfast but I'm aware surgery and flying = not advisable...

Thank you for your thoughts.

How far does he have to travel? In what type of car? Will there be plenty of places to sit down. Somewhere to lie down for a rest?

MinecraftMother · 16/09/2018 21:23

We have a room at the hotel too so she could lie down yes.

I was under forty when I had mine. Absolutely not a chance I'm afraid,

southeastlondonmum · 16/09/2018 21:27

To give you some idea - I just about managed the school run in a car at two weeks

Milkmonster2 · 16/09/2018 21:27

I really don't think it will be a good idea at only 2 weeks post op :-(

She will need to rest lots. The wedding+ all that traveling sounds a lot.

Although it's good to get mobile quickly, the entire head and neck of femur is removed on a hip replacement, it's quite major surgery.

southeastlondonmum · 16/09/2018 21:28

Should say my DH was driving

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2018 21:31

My DF would not have been able to travel after only two weeks. I'm very much in the not a chance camp.

Bechetdiagnosed · 16/09/2018 21:33

I had mine at 39. I round not have been able to do that. It took 6 weeks before I could cope with journeys of longer than 15 mins.

MinecraftMother · 16/09/2018 21:36

Thanks everyone.

I think we'll leave it then, poor mum!!

What a shame for her.

My Dad had his op 6 weeks ago and he's still on 2 crutches and gets very tired. Also on a lot of meds still. He is making progress but is swollen and definitely post-operative still.

MinecraftMother · 16/09/2018 21:52

It is a huge shame. This is the rogue cousin we never thought would settle down!

You also need to consider the equipment she'll need to maintain her post op precautions ie raised toilet seat etc.....

anitagreen · 16/09/2018 22:36

My mum had one last year at 44. She was out of hospital a week later more a less. When she returned home she cooked dinner and was walking around the house doing the school run 10 days later with crutches. It all depends on how it's healing and the pain
