Am I doing pittas wrong??

Gosh I'm bored today and waiting for my dc to come back from their dad's.

About to do packed lunches for tomorrow but am I doing pittas wrong? I'm planning ham (naice) and some tomatoes, but there's no butter in a pitta, so is it moist enough? Tomatoes are a bit moist...
Sometimes I put hummus in them and that seems better, but I don't have any. Ds1 has never complained, but he's not fussy about food and ds2 is fussy and specifies exactly what he'll have, so it's never come up.

What do you put in yours?

Dry horrible things so only ever use them baked and broken up for dips. HTH Wink

JustBeingJobless · 16/09/2018 18:07

I’ve never really thought about putting butter in pittas. Usually would have a bit of mayo if it’s tuna or salad, or hummus. Ds’s favourite is chicken, cheese and bbq sauce, but he only likes that hot and I don’t think it would work cold in a lunch box.

Butter in a pitta bread?

I use them as a base for pizzas.

Cold pittas in a lunch box Confused
Only have them hot and freshly toasted

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 16/09/2018 18:09

I often just shove a slices of cheese in with no butter. Not sure if that's a bit moister than ham though? (I'm vegetarian so never had it.) If they don't complain then I'd just do what you're doing. I couldn't be arsed trying to butter a pitta. They're too fragile.

I used to have them for my packed lunch at school. Grated cheese and carrot is quite a nice combination. Or cheese and cucumber.

They are so much nicer toasted and stuff though...

mastertomsmum · 16/09/2018 18:10

toasted only for me, they are nit for sarnies

MazDazzle · 16/09/2018 18:12

I never use butter in a pitta.

My favourite old school filling is grated cheese, cucumber, iceberg lettuce and salad cream.

Otherwise toasted with humous.

peachjuice · 16/09/2018 18:14

DC has them and I butter them! Lovely.

theduchessstill · 16/09/2018 18:16

Mmm, as I suspected I am doing them wrong. Oh well. I like them hot with lamb and feta - wish I had that for tea...

Toasted only here too. If they are going in a lunchbox then toasted to crisp them up and cut into fingers to dip in hummus or guacamole. Surely tomato would make the insides all wet?

MaverickSnoopy · 16/09/2018 18:24

My friend bought some for soup one day - toasted them and put butter in. Oh my god. Heaven.

Aside from that I tend to put a bit of salad cream in mine.

Eliza9917 · 16/09/2018 18:43

I butter pittas or spread them with dairylea or houmus.

Fuckingnamechanging · 16/09/2018 18:45

Many moons ago there was a wonderful little cafe near where I worked. We all grabbed our lunch from there....fresh large pittas full to bursting with salad, olives and tuna. They called them Pitta Pockets. Oh they were good. I've never managed to properly re-create them myself Sad

PoptartPoptart · 16/09/2018 18:46

Squirt a bit of mayo in with the filling. Only works if you have the squeezy bottle though!

plum100 · 16/09/2018 18:48

I think
I’m doing it wrong too. I slice them I half - poorly as they then break , try and butter them then shove in some ham- we don’t have them very often Grin

CanYouHearThat · 16/09/2018 18:53

Warm with butter AND hummus.

BeeFarseer · 16/09/2018 18:57

I was drunk once and really fancied a baked bean and sausage pasty. Inspiration struck, and I upended a tin of spaghetti into a pitta bread, reasoning in my drunken state that it was sort of the same thing. I don't think I even heated it up.

As long as you're not doing that, you're doing pittas right.

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 16/09/2018 19:00

I would squirt a bit of mayo or some cream cheese if you have any! No butter though.

tobee · 16/09/2018 19:19

Butter in them. Definitely. Very dry otherwise. Plus loads of filling.
