Hi,

Hoping to get some inspiration from people with high energy levels and general lust for life. I am feeling run down, tired (partly due to chronic insomnia) & fed up and would love to hear what you do to make yourself feel well and happy. Thanks!

I don't really have high energy, but if I'm feeling especially lethargic, I spend a day in bed doing nothing / sleeping. It recharges the batteries.

dun1urkin · 16/09/2018 18:12

Sorry it’s not a magic vitamin or something.... but for me it’s regular exercise, eating well and getting enough sleep.

Dakinis · 16/09/2018 18:15

After a year of feeling knackered and sluggish I tried the below and noticed a big difference (don't always stick to it!)

  • Zero caffeine
  • No more than 1-2 units of alcohol a week
  • Jogging 3 x a week - ideally outside for fresh air.
  • Multi vitamin every morning
  • Probiotics every evening
  • Get up and go to bed the same time every day (including weekends)
  • avoid dairy and gluten apart from sourdough bread
  • eat a good breakfast with high protein
  • acupuncture once a fortnight
  • try not to work late, avoid screens in the evening
  • accept all invitations from people offering to look after your kids Wink

Thanks, some good & easy to implement ideas there. Gluten is a potential energy sapper for me as cutting it out has helped in the past.

Energy begets energy. For me, it’s important to just do something and get moving. If I lie around having an ‘easy day’ I feel knackered but if I get up at a reasonable time and get going, I feel great. DH and I are early to bed, early rising types. For me, sleeping 9-5 or even 8.30-4.30 is optimal (says she on mumsnet at 2am - thanks breastfeeding!) and I find early starts are the best way to have a productive day. I honestly think evening time is much more easily wasted than early morning time.

delphguelph · 17/09/2018 02:23

Like dakini but I have caffeine.

notangelinajolie · 17/09/2018 02:53

I just found out that my very low energy levels were Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Best will in the world, I did not have the energy for any kind of exercise. I think you should go to your GP and have some blood tests for a start.

Saggital · 17/09/2018 05:30

I break all the rules and energy is sky high. It comes from the mind here.

The only problem with that is only getting 3 hours sleep, I have been up and dressed since 4am I can't get going as I am so knackered.

This is my life every day.
Apart from when I get so exhausted and I get 8 hours then I can take on the world

redexpat · 17/09/2018 05:58

I find a midmorning smoothie makes a real difference.

mellongoose · 17/09/2018 05:58

B vitamins. If I'm feeling low in energy it's the only thing that will make a difference. Gives me enough in the tank to start exercising which is the real key.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/09/2018 06:18

I find a midmorning smoothie makes a real difference

But for me your mid morning is when I have been up 7 hours and I don’t think unless the smoothie contained speed I don’t think it would make much difference not would I have the energy to make it

Lostandfound81 · 17/09/2018 06:21

Oliversmumsarmy

Why up so early? Insomnia or children?

And why on Earth get dressed so early??

Lostandfound81 · 17/09/2018 06:23

Early nights (I am in bed by 9.45pm latest)
Supplements! Magnesium, zinc, probiotic, multi vitamin and montmeracy cherry
Exercise every day. Either run or yoga
Minimal drinking (once a month)

It works. It really does. For me at least!

Nsbgsyebebdnd · 17/09/2018 06:24

You poor thing re the insomnia- I’ve had periods where it’s laated ages. It was awful. I think that’s your problem there. Not sure how you’ll have energy with no sleep. Hope you get some rest soon

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/09/2018 06:28

Sorry to be rude but are you taking the piss.

Don’t you get it. I have had 3 hours sleep. No matter how much time I hang around in my dressing gown I am not going to go back to sleep till about 1 or 2am tomorrow morning.

I have insomnia. It leaves you knackered all day but apart from a few hours when i have knocked myself out with Melatonin or Valerian I cannot sleep.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/09/2018 06:28

No alcohol, brutal manual work at least twice a week, and a multivitamin every other day.

Oh, and tramadol. Because you're feeling good, you just keep going.

Lostandfound81 · 17/09/2018 06:32

Sounds dreadful
Is it insomnia?

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/09/2018 06:45

I don’t drink and I used to do a very manual job. Can’t do it now as I am so knackered.

Lostandfound81 · 17/09/2018 12:31

@Oliversmumsarmy

Is it insomnia?

Babybearsporij · 17/09/2018 12:56

Disclaimer - I don't suffer from insomnia. That may need medicating?

I do eat a very balanced and varied diet, including treats and exercise - run, strength or swim every day.

I think having a positive attitude towards life helps as well.

Queenoftheworld101 · 29/01/2022 20:37

No refined carbs and no tv and phone, tech 1 hour before bed. If i do use it, i turn the brightness to the lowest number. Blue light messes with your circadian rhythm which messes with your sleep and energy. Increasing my vitamin d, iron and b12 levels.

ChildHeadache · 29/01/2022 20:54

I have genuinely wondered if my motivation issues are adhd related and if speed/adhd drugs would help.

ThirstyMeeples · 29/01/2022 21:00

I have high energy levels and agree with the above.
For me, a really regular sleep pattern- I never have a late night or a lie in.
Minimal alcohol- probably half a bottle of wine a week.
Exercise and being outdoors generally. I run or go for a walk every day.
Eating at set times, yoga or meditation (only 10 or 15 minutes) each day.
Working on what causes me stress- it can vary but usually work related. When something is getting to me and it is becoming prolonged, I change it. Basically not putting up with things that don't serve me.
But also... It may be a medical causeso worth getting some basic bloods done to rule out this. If all OK, remember to take vit D supplements. Think menopause as well depending on your age as this can contribute.
Hope you can make some tweaks and feel better

Whatwhywhenwhere · 29/01/2022 21:37

Walk as much as possible
Walk/run up stairs if you can
Do things you enjoy and look forward to in your spare time
Vitamins
Add a little five minute task here and there and build them up- five minutes ironing, sweep floors, clean , do admin, schedule in calls, etc. I like ticking off lists and congratulating myself for getting stuff done.
Mainly I am high energy because that’s what I have to be to get everything done.
Also, multi-tasking- on hold and cleaning, putting some food on etc. I always seem to do a couple of things at once.
