How much do you spend each year on holidays?

We're pricing up for next year, haven't been since 2015 as we "can't afford" it, yet our household income is ok - about £90k gross. There never seems to be spare money though.

Curious to know how much other people spend on their holidays each year as a proportion of their income.

we havent had a holiday abroad for 5 years and were looking forward to booking a nice family break next year however ive just been made redundant so thats that then.

Dowser · 19/09/2018 15:20

A lot.
There’s £2000 Caravan rent plus gas , electric and spends while we are there.
8 weeks in Tenerife and 8-10 weeks touring the uk.

Our home fuel bills are quite low !

I know it wasn't the intention but this thread has made me think we should spend more not less on family holidays.

Lostandfound81 · 19/09/2018 15:27

@lexi727

You said it was a dramatic fall!

user187656748 · 19/09/2018 15:28

£10k less on your holiday budget is still a fairly significant cut back whatever you earn.

TheViceOfReason · 19/09/2018 15:30

Household income around £110k. 2 adults only.

Holidays have cost under £2500 for this year:
1 week city break for two
3 days city break for 1
2 day city break for 2
week in europe for 2

That's the most we've ever spent! Typically it would be under £1000 per year.

lexi727 · 19/09/2018 15:32

@Lostandfound81 I said we cut back massively, not dramatically! It's a cut of £10,000 which I would still describe as a large amount of money! I understand that in the grand scheme of things £10,000 wouldn't be much to my husband - but it is still a decent sum of money.

CMOTDibbler · 19/09/2018 15:33

Our main holiday was £150, camping in the UK. We also had a weekend break at a festival which was £120 for the hotel plus festival tickets (the expensive part).

Dowser · 19/09/2018 15:35

From April to November we spend 4-5 nights a week at the van . When we aren’t traveling about that is.
We will have had about 90 nights there this year come the end of the season
At £50 a night for a Travelodge, probably more on a Saturday... that’s £4.5k

So bargain. Also we go when the weather isn’t too grand .. something we wouldn’t do on a whim if we had to book a hotel.
Probably about £12k on all our breaks

About half our annual budget

pumkinspicetime · 19/09/2018 15:44

I think we spend about 10% of our net income on holidays and always have regardless of how much we earned at any point. The only exception to this was when dc were in nursery which took up all my salary. Of course what you prioritize matters when spending money, for us travel is high up the list.

Lostandfound81 · 19/09/2018 15:54

@user187656748

The income of that poster is £550k. So 1.8%

PurpleTrilby · 19/09/2018 15:57

Probably £500 total is the most I've ever spent on holiday(s) in a year. Cheap everything, booked independently, never packages, but then I enjoy planning it all and as I've said before, I'm a skanker, so cheap is good!

Lostandfound81 · 19/09/2018 15:57

Apologies Lexi.

Although to be fair “massively” and “dramatically” are pretty similar descriptive words!

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/09/2018 16:05

£4.4k take home from £90k doesn't sound right. We earn between £55-60k and our take home is close to £4k pm and that's after me paying nearly £200 pm pension contributions.

OP I'd look at your whole budget and what else you're spending on, as you're almost certainly spending enough elsewhere to free up a holiday fund.

Titsywoo · 19/09/2018 16:08

Yes it should be £5k for a £90000 salary

Can he give back the company car?or is there an option for a car allowance instead. Unless his pension contributions are massive, that seems like a huge monthly commitment and you could probably do better on a car finance scheme. Salary calculator says that at that income with a 10% pension + £50 childcare vouchers he’d be getting £3.1k per month so the tax must be big chunk unless they are bigger pensions or other dedications like student loans/underpayments etc.

@Lostandfound81

Hiya,

To answer your question, its more just because its spare cash (or money that would just go on material things). We have savings-not huge, but enough and we budget everything else.

What I meant by the £600 is that I quite enjoy going on a week long holiday in England. My husband however, is the the lover of holidays abroad hence the bigger budget.

I just like getting away from home, wherever that may be .

Dowser · 20/09/2018 11:47

Me too Megan.
I don’t see our time in the caravan as a holiday...just living a different place.
We look for the bargains.
Have about three separate weeks in Dorset with friends. Rest is Travelodges
I can’t see the point of paying for expensive hotels.
Some people like one big blowout
I prefer lots of littler breaks..but then being retired.. we can

CantankerousCamel · 20/09/2018 15:33

Time in our caravan is definitely our (only) holiday.

We splash out on parks and sites throughout the year which we know will be our space in the summer.

Oh and festivals
