How do I halt sickness in its tracks?

Sore throat, sore ears, leaden legs and an upset stomach...all my usual signals for the onset of a cold/sore throat. I'm starting a new job Monday (and flying to it - short haul) tomorrow. How do I stop the sickness before it starts?

The only thing that keeps colds at bay for me, is Vicks first defence.
If you can catch the cold before it takes off, it can stop the streaming nose and sore throat but I do usually still get the stuffy head and aches.
Hope you feel better soon!

If it were me I'd be taking steaming hot showers/steaming my head and then wrapping up like a mummy, and basically trying to sleep as much as possible, resting when I couldn't stay asleep any more. I'd probably neck some Vit C/zinc (food or tablets) too even though it might be pointless.

Basically give my body nothing to do but work on the infection.

On the day of flight (if necessary) I'd be dosing with alternating ibu/paracet.

Good luck and get well soon!

For me it's any herbal tea with lots of honey and fresh lemon! Also if you can get your hands on some echinacea it will really help!

Vitamin C, zinc tablets and echinacea for me. If you can use First Defence, go for it but the stinging on one side is too much for me!

Sauna, hot baths, get very warm, kills the germs. Salt wash mouth rinses.

Steep fresh ginger, lemon and cinnamon stick in boiling water. Drink loads of it. Cinnamon is a natural antibiotic and they're all antiseptic.

Rest, warmth, good healthy food and a bit of light exercise.

Sleep and sweat!

I played basketball for 3 hours this morning and squash for an hour last night so that is the exercise part?

In the house we have an orange, some grapefruits, kiwis and tomatoes, all of which I will eat for dinner, breakfast and lunch. We also have cinnamon sticks, and ibuprofen.

I'll try to sleep but have to pack and am generally quite anxious about tomorrow, also had a really upset stomach which doesn't help me feel sleepy/rested.

I'll buy Vicks first defence when I land in U.K. What is it? A pill?

Thanks to everyone!

Apparently exercise for about 30 minutes boosts the immune system in women, but exercise for more than 45 minutes depresses it for several hours.

Basketball for 3 hours is not what I call light exercise! Grin

Hope you feel better soon OP

Vicks first defence makes me worse in the long run.
It works for a few days by holding off the symptoms but eventually the cold comes out and I always end up with some sort of hideous cough and chest infection.
If your body has a virus then I personally think it’s better to let it occur naturally and let your immune system deal with it rather than suppressing the symptoms.

LastOneDancing · 16/09/2018 07:47

poptart I do agree in letting nature run it's course but in special situations (like starting a new job) I think its ok to try and dodge the worst of the symptoms. But thankfully I've never gone on to have a full cold or infection after.

It's a nasal spray OP but if you've woken up with a full on cold, save your money as it will be too late!
