Would you take another job that is within walking distance over one with a 30 minutes commute?

Job within walking distance is minimum wage, other job is 40p an hour more.

Similar job and shift pattern and hours.

Definitely, you'd lose the extra in travel costs and convenience.

GandolfBold · 15/09/2018 13:44

I should add that I already do the commute job. I like it but the travel 3 days a week is getting me down, plus the team dynamic is crap but I love the service users I work with.

Walking distance to keep life simple and costs down but you haven't given much information. Are there no other factors that would help you decide? Are you currently bored in the job that is a 30 minute commute away? Would you welcome a fresh start?! Would you value that hour extra a day? 40p extra is not much of a incentive to stay in a job you're tired of.

Yes I would accept a lower paying job where I could walk to work. I've had a few jobs within walking distance and it is wonderful to have a positive commute, I feel energised and happy when I arrive.

It depends on your finances though whether you would miss the money.

You mention service users though, would it be awkward if you bumped into them outside work if they live near you too?

DonnaDarko · 15/09/2018 13:49

Definitely. From the sounds of it, you wouldn't see much of a difference

It takes me nearly 2 hours to get to work, and my travel is £4k a year.
I would happily lose 4-5k out of my wage packet to walk to work. Unfortunately, jobs in my local area pay £10k less. Fmylife.

The walking distance one. You'd only spend the extra 40p an hour on travel costs.

snowgirl1 · 15/09/2018 13:52

Definitely the one within walking distance.

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 15/09/2018 13:54

It depends

If the money's the same, the walking distance job.

If there's any danger your work could follow you home in any form, the commuting job.

Easynow · 15/09/2018 13:56

30 mins each way or 15 mins each way?

How long to walk there?

BunnyCarr · 15/09/2018 14:07

Take the job within walking distance. You can never buy back time.

Singlenotsingle · 15/09/2018 14:16

If you do a job with a 30 minutes commute, you've got petrol costs, maybe parking, and an extra 5 hours a week out of the house unpaid travelling time. Take the job within walking distance. It's a no brainer.

AvoidingDM · 15/09/2018 14:16

How many hours do you work?
Full time 50p an hour is about £2k pa. So 40p will be about £1600 less tax, NI etc.

So actual take home will be around £100 per month more. Is it costing that in travel costs?

Other factors to consider, future prospects, how well you get on with your boss, job security?
