Advice on sterilisers/bottle warmers

FTM here due in 6 weeks. I am hoping to breastfeed but my mum is really keen on buying something for the baby and we have absolutely everything apart from bottles/steriliser/warmer. Obviously I won’t need a lot of this if I am breastfeeding but I wouldn’t be intending to do it for the long run as I am going to back to work after 6 months.

I feel like I really like the look and what I have heard about the MAM bottles, and my mum has found a MAM steriliser and bottle warmer which looks really good, however I honestly don’t really know what I am looking for.

Can anyone give any advice or tips on products they’ve found worked/didn’t work?

Tommy Tipee perfect prep is great. Makes up the water for a bottle at the correct temperature so very handy.

I recommend the MAM bottles but we never used the steriliser as we use the Milton tabs and buckets.

Can I use that with the MAM bottles? Thank you!

Hi OP, we use MAM bottles and love them. The one thing is they can be sterilised in the microwave without a steriliser!

Yes you can use the Milton sterilisers with anything- just drop a tablet into Milton bucket with cold water and put your bottles in - they're ready to use in 15 mins straight from the bucket x

YY to the Milton bucket - I know loads of people who bought electronic / microwave sterilisers before their babies were born and yet ended up switching to a Milton bucket within a few months.

Are MAM bottles anti colic? If not, I suggest Dr Brown instead. No more expensive than any other brand (at least, not the last time I checked) but you'll end up buying them if you have a colicky baby - might as well just buy them in the fist place.

Thanks everyone, I ordered the perfect prep machine as it’s only £60 on Asda’s baby event at the moment it usually retails at £100. I won’t bother with a steriliser as the MAM bottles sterilise in the microwave anyway! And yes they are anti colic they have amazing reviews!

I use the mam bottles with the tommy tippee electric steriliser and perfect prep. They are very good for babies with colic. As a PP said you can also put them in the microwave to sterilise. Worth noting if you are heating up or cooling down mam bottles by placing them in water - take the lid off otherwise water will go in via the airholes at the bottom causing the formula to be watered down.

I got a bottle warmer with the perfect prep machine but have not used it as guidelines now state each bottle has to be made fresh and not use after 1 hour.

Good luck. I was about to recommend Perfect Prep and MAM! If she's wanting to buy you more, get her to stick you up on Lanisoh Nipple Cream; it's expensive but worth it!

I BF all mine til at least 6 months too and bought a bottle warmer in case I froze breast milk and needed to heat - I never used it, even when we started formula so I'd say not to bother with one of those!

Pamdoo · 16/09/2018 05:19

The mam bottles are great, if you do decide to get a steriliser I'd recommend just getting a cold water one. I've had electric and microwave and find them such a faff. The cold water one you literally wash everything then throw it in and it's sterile after 15 mins, and you don't need to worry about things staying sterile. Also bottle warmers aren't really much use, when i was expressing I would just warm it in hot water and formula is made up fresh anyway!

And as PP said, make sure if cooling or heating a mam bottle to remove the teat and collar as they suck water in if you don't!

What about a pump instead? More useful than bottle stuff if you're planning to BF.
