Is this normal to sleep in a dressing gown?

Does anyone else get very cold at night that they have to sleep with a dressing gown on?
I have lost a lot of weight in the last 6 months and wondering if my body isn't used to no insulation and this is why I'm having to sleep with pyjamas and a thick fleecy dressing gown and the heating on .

Would people say this is normal that I feel that cold?
I have felt like this for awhile now and worrying slightly could this be a health issue as I lost a lot of weight very quickly though stress and now it's not like me to feel cold all the time.

Hmm. Overactive thyroid would be my first guess. Appointment at gp and likely blood tests. Good luck op.

If you are in the UK, it really hasn't been cold enough to have the heating on.
In bed, I never have the heating on anyway - a decent quilt insulates you and should maintain your bodyheat. Your dressing gown is for when you aren't under the quilt.
So, in a mild temperature, under a quilt, with fleecy pajamas one that should be plenty for someone who 'feels the cold'.
If you also put the heating on and also wear a big dressing gown, then no, that isn't 'normal'.

Are you cold during the day?

SpoonBlender · 14/09/2018 23:49

The temperature has dropped hugely, and I know I'm very cold sensitive when I'm skinnier (haven't been for a while...!). I'd toss the dressing gown on top of the duvet rather than wear it in bed though.

For the cost of a few weeks of heating the house overnight you can get an electric blanket... they are an absolute joy. If you share a bed get one with two individual controllers though.

Beg to differ Back, it's down to 10C overnight here and 16C during the day, our (daytime) heating fires up when the house drops below 18C so it's been topping the place up for a week or two now.

I sleep in my dressing gown but usually in the depths of winter! DH thinks I'm barking! Also sometimes sleep with a hoody with the hood up. Extra warm!

Re reading my post I think I've confused myself. Under active thyroid usually feel the cold and over active gets warm. Sorry.

HellonHeels · 14/09/2018 23:52

If you lost the weight intentionally then I think it's probably normal, I lost 5 stone a few years ago and just froze when the weather got cooler.

If you've lost weight without meaning to then I'd suggest a check with GP.

MarmiteTermite · 14/09/2018 23:53

Hmm over active thyroid does not make you feel cold -quite the opposite - that’s an under active thyroid. Which is usually accompanied by weight gain rather than weight loss.

Branleuse · 14/09/2018 23:54

In summer too, or just now the nights are getting colder?

donajimena · 14/09/2018 23:55

I do. Its a comfort thing for me. At the moment I've got my dressing gown on but I only have my legs under the covers.

zen1 · 14/09/2018 23:59

I have an underactive thyroid and other health conditions that cause me to feel cold. From October onwards, I normally need to sleep in a fleece onesie with socks on. Despite the extremely hot summer, I have slept with a 12 tog winter duvet on every night except for 3 this year. I feel cold if it’s less than 20° outside. If you’re worried, get some bloods done to rule out a health problem.

Pressuredrip · 14/09/2018 23:59

I've been wearing my dressing gown in bed the last week. Last night I actually woke up shivering and went and grabbed a hoodie to wear too. Maybe it depends where you live. I'm in the north west and it's been cold. I've put it down to the fact I've recently returned from a sun holiday and my toddler hasn't breastfed in 3 weeks and while breastfeeding your core body temperature tends to run warmer. I haven't felt the cold for the last few years with breastfeeding and pregnancies but boy I'm feeling it now. I think it's worth you getting a doctors appointment just because you say you've lost weight recently too and you say it is stress which suggests you haven't been actively dieting. Could be a thyroid issue and a simple blood test can determine that.

I would use a hot water bottle and extra blankets on the bed.

Butterymuffin · 15/09/2018 00:13

It'll work better on top of the bed. Primark do cheap fleece throws that are very warm as extra layers too.

hmmwhatatodo · 15/09/2018 07:30

Hi op, I often sleep with a dressing gown on, when it’s winter the bedroom radiator will sometimes be on too. I occasionally wake up sweating but mostly I’m fine.
