Silly or serious suggestions both appreciated!

Although - some serious ones would be great. I haven't a clue what to do with it.

What makes you think of starting a business? I’d invest it, have an amazing holiday or pay off some of the mortgage.

sleepingdragons · 14/09/2018 20:29

I'm stuck in a rut, things are pretty rubbish and have been skint for longer than I care to remember. This is an inheritance and I feel it should be enough to make a real difference to my life and the DC and lever us out of this rut.

But where to start?

If it just goes in my bank account with no plans, it'll be gone in next to no time I imagine.

I want to be a wedding planner!!

PurpleDaisies · 14/09/2018 20:31

What to you do now? What sorts of things do you enjoy? Might you be better using it it to fund some training?

Running a business is really hard work and if there’s not something you’re passionate about, it might not be a good use of the money,

Sorry for your loss. Flowers

Want2bSupermum · 14/09/2018 20:31

Honestly, £10k is a relatively small amount for starting a business. I'd look at investing in your own education so you can increase your income.

sleepingdragons · 14/09/2018 20:33

Because I'm miserable, skint and in a rut. If I spend it on a holiday I'll still be miserable skint and stuck when I return to my life.

I currently earn only £12k part time doing something I used to enjoy but don't now, that fits round school hours.

Before kids I worked in the city and was pretty well paid. Don't want to do that now.

PurpleDaisies thank you, I appreciate it.

What sorts of things do you enjoy

That's an excellent question! I don't really know anymore.

I'll have a think and come back with a better answer!

I'd buy one if those mobile dog grooming vans and do that, and also do dog walking.

sleepingdragons · 14/09/2018 20:38

I'd look at investing in your own education so you can increase your income.

What kind of thing would you suggest?

I got a 1st at BA level.

Haha I hate dogs!

But yes, that's the kind of thing. You can start small can't you.

toomuchfaster I can see that bring great fun!

I'm not organised enough though.

Food and drink industry. Good, simple fresh food. In the centre of town, carvery, lunch.

Batch cooking and average €10 per head. Busiest times 1-4 and evening 7-11

NameChanger22 · 14/09/2018 20:40

What skills or interests do you have?I can think of some business ideas for you based around that.

One of my hobbies is dreaming up businesses and planning how they would look, operate, the name etc. I never actually start them though.

TrippingTheVelvet · 14/09/2018 20:40

I'd love to be a professional mediator

Bimgy85 · 14/09/2018 20:40

Sorry if 10k was all I had then maybe I dunno set up a bakery from home?

Smidge001 · 14/09/2018 20:41

In that case I'd use it to pay for after school care so you could go back to the city and earn way more than that again!

mycatplotsdeath · 14/09/2018 20:44

I would open a little Deli.
One that specialising in English artisan products.
It would also have a few tables in it and do cold meat and cheese plates with English wines, ciders and beers.
Do you want a partner?

HollowTalk · 14/09/2018 20:44

OP, if you were 18 again and could do anything you wanted (job wise only!) then what would you do? That might give us some idea for what you could do now.

And how old are your children? Do they need before/after school care?

ittooshallpass · 14/09/2018 20:45

I'd do something in the beauty field. People always want waxing, massage, nails, etc

sleepingdragons · 14/09/2018 20:45

My skills - pretty good at computer stuff, can build a half decent website, great with people, particularly difficult people! Great at keeping my cool in a crisis / stressful situations don't phase me. Creative problem solving, good at strategy, not put off by mindless tasks, like feeling I'm doing something socially useful. Love crafty stuff but never gave myself the time to explore it. Good at explaining difficult ideas simply.

Terrible at deadlines. Crap at organisation.

Maybe try and use some to make a go of the app idea in my head (I can code but lack business skills so would need to pay someone for that)

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/09/2018 20:48

people will always want to eat and drink

and get their hair cut

sleepingdragons · 14/09/2018 20:50

I'm good at marketing.

Not a girly girl! Couldn't do anything that involved make up or being very groomed for.

Do you like working alone?

Is it important to you that you work from home, or would you want somewhere to go to (like a shop)?
