Car alarm blaring outside my house and owner nowhere to be found

There is a car parked outside my house and the alarm has been going off at regular intervals for days on end. No one seems to know who the owner is and several angry neighbours have left notes of complaint.

I've checked, and the MOT has expired, so in absolute desperation I called the non-emergency police number to see if they can silence it! But no. They're only interested in the fact it has no MOT and say that noise nuisance isn't anything they can help with.

After several nights of disturbance and an ever growing group of disgruntled neighbours all reporting the same...what on earth can we do?
Anyone have a car savvy DH who knows how to disable an alarm?

Hmmat the assumption that only a DH would know how to do anything.
I definitely wouldn't use a crowbar to open the bonnet, and then disconnect the battery, cause that'd be illegal.
I definitely wouldn't do it at night with a balaclava on. Wink
I definitely wouldn't let the tyres down and inform council that it's apparently been abandoned.

I would keep a diary of exactly when and for how long it goes off, and be onto Environmental Health at local council, 9am Monday morning, repeat each and every time the wretched thing goes off, plus complain to local councillor.

How horrid for you.

Prise open the bonnet and cut the wires to the battery.

I have never been known to do any of these things. Could you not smash the window, let the handbrake offand move it?

My humble apologies for assuming only a DH would know such things. I can't think straight, I'm just so utterly frustrated! I'm out of the house all day at work but return home to the familiar sound and I want to smash the windscreen with a hammer!
I'm puzzled by how it can keep going without flattening the battery, or isn't it attached to the battery?

It uses v. little power, for something so aggravating.
You'll be insane before the battery runs flat. Unless you're lucky and it's a crap battery.

Repeat, definitely don't disconnect the battery yourself.
I wouldn't.
Wink

Apparently, according to Google, a decent car battery can keep powering a car alarm for up to 2 months. Angry

If you don't want to prise open the bonnet then you probably won't want to break the driver side window t get to the bonnet release catch (after having googled it is in an accessible place for the window)

I'd try the Police again. I'm not sure how you thought they could silence it but they can check if it has a registered owner & try and contact them. Explain it's been going off for days - ignore the MOT details just ask for help in contacting the owner

We often get calls of that kind of nature & though there's nothing that can be done to stop the noise it only takes 5 mins to run a couple of checks. Definitely worth a try

hawleybits · 14/09/2018 23:27

I really hoped that the police would run a trace on the owner and get him to silence it himself. I gave them the reg no. They can see it isn't taxed therefore, invalidating any insurance I presume? So he'd have to shift it off the public highway and subsequently out of my earshot.

I absolutely would not be following the above advice and smashing the window to get to the bonnet catch. Nor would I be laying in wait to catch the owner’s face when they finally come back and find the broken window and a car full of rain water. Nor would I then go after them and give them an absolutely bollocking. No sir.

It’s probably dumped though. You could try it and then just report it. Grin
