Help me understand the disturbance last night

Last night, sleeping alone as H is away. Went to sleep as usual taking a mild sleeping tablet. Off I doze zzzzz all good.

Woken by a disturbance in the room, some pretty loud crashings and banging close to the window, rustlings - like a cat play/trashing things.

Fine, I have a new kitten - so I wake up blearily and annoyed and click on the light. Curtain by the window is still swaying and moving from the disturbance. Bloody cat. Except, when I sit up I notice said kitten is still curled up asleep next to me.

Okaaay.... a breeze from the window must have disturbed some stuff and set the curtains going. So I cautiously go over. Window is closed.

So what happened?
I can think of a couple of possibilities:

That noise dream thing where you think you're woken by a noise by there isn't one (this doesn't explain curtain still moving when I turned light on, although would explain why the kitten wasn't disturbed by the noise)

It was the cat mucking around and when I woke it quickly got on the bed curled up and faked being asleep (I'm not convinced, normally at the first sign I'm awake the bloody thing wants to play attack - do cats fake it like this?)

It was a ghost. But they don't exist. The other day a lamp in the area fell off the desk, and I remembered that and called out today 'Is anyone there?', but of course no one was there so I felt daft and went downstairs to eat a bag of skittles.

Mice? We don't have mice as far as I'm aware. Small, relatively modern (1940s) mid terrace and if we had mice I think I would have heard/seen them.

Any thoughts? The curtain was definitely moving!

I spent the next hour too scared to close my eyes and it didn't help when my son started sleep talking in the other room!!

I mean let's face it. A ukelele-playing spider is going to freak anyone out no matter what time of day it is......

I once lived in a house where the piano keys randomly sounded in the dead of night...... I told myself it was mice and moved out soon afterwards.

I think you have a secret lodger who hides in that box by daytime...

mumsastudent · 14/09/2018 22:54

aha your son sleeps in a bunk bed - book/toy/football random thing falls off his bed - or were you reading & the book falls off your bed & you leaping from sleep disturbs the curtain or door slams shut some where in house & its bang etc or you have poltergeist any dc entering puberty? or birds flies into window (a night flying pigeon??? thy do this during day- got it? a vampire pigeon!

Oh I feel your pain OP. I had years of sleep issues like this I nearly lost my mind, I could see/hear people in my room, coming up the stairs into my room, things moving..

However, this was a good 4 years ago it stopped! But about a year ago I woke up the way you described & the curtain was moving 100% moving but my boyfriend said it wasn't, after the same sort of thing but with doors etc over a few months and buying a Fitbit to monitor heart rate we concluded I was having panic attacks in my sleep, which would wake me & leave my brain not having a clue to to me the curtain/door etc were moving.

Doubt that this will reassure you much but wanted to post!

civicxx · 14/09/2018 23:18

Ps. Fully blamed the pill for turning me into an anxious panic ridden loonatic. No issues since I stopped taking it. & it was Night Terrors I suffered with before that from age 14 - 23 absolutely horrific wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

HowDoIGetOffTheBus · 14/09/2018 23:24

No idea, but am loving the skittles detail in your post.

Synecdoche · 14/09/2018 23:47

@AllAtHome that's fucking terrifying

MadMaryBoddington · 14/09/2018 23:58

we have attic mice at times and the noise is surprisingly loud until the snap.

Bloody hell. I read that as attack mice. I was wondering what the hell ‘the snap’ meant, and thinking it sounded terrifying. I actually read it three times trying to make sense of it.

Time for bed.

Oh and it was totally the cat.

Aliens

MayhemandMadness01 · 15/09/2018 07:18

Ok so its a 1940's house, chances are then that the pointing in the brickwork may need some attention and there is a breeze getting through which is moving the curtains. Happened to me in strong winds but I was also getting wasps in.

Aplacetoshelter · 15/09/2018 07:21

Any chance you have a rat in the house?

tabulahrasa · 15/09/2018 07:23

If cats knock things over or fall or anything like that, they do tend to go... well that totally never happened, so I’d blame the cat too.

DinosApple · 15/09/2018 08:04

Twice I've had some sort of sleep/wake hallucination.

Once I was woken by the noise of a rattlesnake and woke my boyfriend, terrified, to get rid of it... It was totally real. To me. i even made him check under the bed Blush

The other time I was drifting off, opened my eyes and saw an enormous spider (size of my hand tarantula type of spider). I literally ran out of the room and got my brother to come and check... I was probably 19 ish. Needless to say he thought it was hilarious.

Junebug123 · 15/09/2018 08:39

Once my curtain was moving and I was so freaked out. I thought a bird was trapped behind it. It was my DC's helium birthday balloon bobbing about behind the curtain. I take it you don't have a helium balloon?Grin

The ukulele playing spider was a monster!

So we had two ukes in the corner of our room under the window. Just turned the light off having a bit of a cuddle before sleep, and heard “twanggggg” then a serious of little twang. My heart nearly fell out my arse. We were just gripping each other like “aaahhhh wtf”
DP bravely flung himself off the bed to turn the light on and as I peered off the corner of the bed saw the biggest house spider I’ve ever seen! (This bastard wouldn’t even fit in a pint glass!)
I wanted to grab a bag and leave this 8 legged ukuele playing freak to it and never return. However DP was very brave and told him he wasn’t welcome to play here and to kindly leave (i.e got a Tupperware to fit the bugger in and took it outside).
Needless to say I moved the ukuleles out the bedroom.
