Ideas for more substantial breakfast for teenage boy?

DS (14) has told me that he's started feeling faint and light headed while he's at school - always during the same lesson (lesson 2: 9.30-10.30)

I suspect that this might be caused by his blood sugar dropping (he generally eats a portion of his lunch at break, immediately after lesson 2 after which he says he is fine).

He currently generally eats a large (I mean large) bowl of cereal at about 7am. Anyone any ideas as to what he could eat first thing to keep him going for longer? I'd prefer not to start cooking in the morning (and he definitely won't!) but guess I cook if it was something quick and easy.

Add a banana and a yogurt to it?

Maybe give him some slow release breakfast biscuits for the way in or something.

2cats2many · 14/09/2018 16:02

He needs protein to keep him going. Will he have scrambled egg? Or Greek yoghurt? Or some nuts?

fedup0f · 14/09/2018 16:03

My 14yd old has:
Beans on toast, porridge, crumpets, pancakes, sausage or bacon sandwich. Occasionally toast. Not all at once though! He will cook for himself but I do if I'm feeling nice.

Toasted bagel and peanut butter? Porridge with sliced banana?

titchy · 14/09/2018 16:04

What sort of cereal? Porridge far more filling that coco-pops for example.

Ohyesiam · 14/09/2018 16:05

Mine likes a fried egg sandwich.

Timeforabiscuit · 14/09/2018 16:05

Go continental?, cheese and ham sandwich, boiled eggs, add a croissant now and then too?

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/09/2018 16:07

Egg bread is popular here, or an egg hunt.

Taffeta · 14/09/2018 16:07

A cheese and ham panini

Hogtini · 14/09/2018 16:07

What kind of cereal is it? If it's sugary one then he's bound to have a high then a dip.
Could you get some porridge sachets/do it overnight in the slow cooker? Overnight oats with greek yoghurt and mixed fruit? Scrambled egg, omelette (I do these the night before).

Believeitornot · 14/09/2018 16:08

I would see if it’s the same at the weekend and rule out other possible causes.

Anything with eggs, or peanut butter would be better I think. Is he drinking enough water?

CloudCaptain · 14/09/2018 16:09

I was gonna ask what sort of cereal. Porridge/ weetabix/ granola/ muesli are much more filling than cocopops/ frosties/ cornflakes/ etc.
You can premake eggy breakfast cups in muffin trays and freeze them.
Show him how to make eggs/ pancakes/ etc at the weekend so he can do it for himself. About time he learnt. You can cook bacon in the microwave and it turns out reasonable.

DancingDot · 14/09/2018 16:09

Porridge - add nuts, fruit , honey, milk. If you cba cooking in the morning and you can afford it, you can buy the microwave protein porridge pots. It also only takes about 3 mins to make scrambled eggs in the micro.

Nottotheirstandards · 14/09/2018 16:10

Cheese and spinach omelette with brown toast and baked beans

butlerswharf · 14/09/2018 16:10

Eggs or porridge

DancingDot · 14/09/2018 16:11

And check out if there are other causes - is something going on in that class that is causing him anxiety (light headedness is a symptom).

CloudCaptain · 14/09/2018 16:11

Oh yeah and not to worry you? but have you considered an underlying health reason such as diabetes? May be worth a check up at the Gp, just to be sure?

SeaToSki · 14/09/2018 16:11

Peeled hard boiled eggs in the fridge, sliced cheese and a bagel. He can eat his cereal and grab the rest to eat while going to school. Spreading it out will help as will the protein and fat.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 14/09/2018 16:12

Most cereal basically isn’t food, it’s so processed. Except proper porridge/rolled oats. Beans in toast or something like egg muffins you can make at the weekend and keep in the fridge would be good. Peanut butter and banana on a bagel.

BearSoFair · 14/09/2018 16:16

16yo DS1 usually has toast with either scrambled eggs, beans, spaghetti hoops, or tinned tomatoes. Not entirely convinced by the tomatoes myself but he seems to enjoy it!

Almostthere15 · 14/09/2018 16:16

How about baked oats/flapjacks as you can make them the night before. Or baked eggs (frittata type muffins) these could go in with tea.

I'd also think about adding/swapping cereal for granary bread with peanut butter and a banana.

For mornings where none of this works (and we all have them) some breakfast biscuits in his bag that he can eat in between the two lessons (presuming there's a walk between classrooms).

BearSoFair · 14/09/2018 16:17

Oh actually recently he's been having toasted English muffins quite a lot, he has those with eggs too.

RedSkyLastNight · 14/09/2018 16:19

He normally has branflakes or muesli (not sure where they fit in the "keeping him full" scale?) And I sometimes make overnight oats which are scoffed down (maybe I should compare different breakfast and how he feels).

Some great ideas on here, thank you. He would definitely go for food he could grab and eat in stages.

I don't think there is an underlying cause, but good point to keep an eye on it. He has a different subject every day in lesson 2, so I also don't think it's a problem with lessons (and today was in maths, which is one of his favourites).

I'd be like this if I had something like Cornflakes. I have an oat muesli with skyr yoghurt which is high protein. Some mueslis/cereals are more high protein as well, I think Holland and Barrett do one. Slices of ham and cheese too maybe.

cloudtree · 14/09/2018 16:20

We rotate the following breakfasts

pancakes
bacon or sausage sandwiches
scrambled eggs and tomatoes on toast
cheese and beans on toast
croque monsiuer
cheese and ham omelette
sausages and beans
porridge
