Is this sod’s law??? Or a subconscious sabotage???

Does anyone find that in a busy life of being a working mum. The minute you have some time to yourself something happens???

I’ve taken a week off work so I could be there for my daughter as her school were phasing her in with different pickup times. I was looking forward to the last 3 days where I had 5 hours to myself... something of a rare thing with a very stressful job and not at home much. I even posted a thread Wednesday morning about what can I do with 5 hours...

Both on Wednesday and Thursday unexpected issues happened which meant I was out of the house and was a support network to someone else (won’t go into detail in case it’s outing) so I thought at least I have Friday, 1 day to myself.

NOPE! I woke up with horrendous joint pain, headache, feel sick, lethargy, tried to sleep, not happening. Sit still for too long, it hurts. Move around a bit, it hurts, just generally feel unwell and rubbish.

I’m soooo annoyed it seems to happen every single time I get some time off, does this happen to anyone else!???

Day off last Tuesday, ll decided to send workmen unannounced to erect scaffolding at 7.00.am.
Day off this week, took toddler to supermarket cafe and doughnut maker out of order!!
Sad

It’s quite a common thing to goer sick as soon as you stop doing something like a stressful job and take some time off.

Lovelydovey · 14/09/2018 17:26

On more than one occasion I’ve booked time off work during term time so that I can have a few hours to myself and one of the DC has ended up at home off sick.

I wonder why that is though. It’s really annoying as I got so annoyed/stressed with work and o really need the downtime and I just can’t seem to enjoy it :-(

My (not a scientist) theory is that it's an adrenaline dip - my reasoning as to why I always always get ill on the 27th December. I run around like a madwoman for days, then it all stops, I relax - and some sort of virus will hit.

Happens all the time here too, my back always goes first week of hols/first week the kids go back to school.

IHeartKingThistle · 14/09/2018 19:26

Well-known amongst teachers. Many a much-needed half term spent coughing/sneezing/feeling like death, recovering just in time to go back to school.

IHeartKingThistle · 14/09/2018 19:28

Sympathy though!

mummytoc · 14/09/2018 19:36

On one hand I’m sorry it’s happened to you all on the other I’m glad it’s not just me xx

Whenever I organise to go for coffee with a couple of friends there is nearly always one of the children ill and off school. More often than not it is the youngest (8 years old), so can't leave him alone in the house for a couple of hours.

After it happened a couple of times in a row I realised I had mentioned to ds that I was going out with the friends, so agreed with aforementioned friends to try an experiment. I didn't tell ds about going for coffee and we made sure not to mention it while chatting in the playground so he didn't overhear. (In case he was trying to get the day off school to go to his favourite cafe with us). Lo and behold, the next time I came to go out (during school hours) he was ill and I had to cancel again! Last year it felt like it happened every time we arranged to go out.

Whenever I make plans for myself I am always wary that something is going to go wrong, thankfully if it is when dh is around he can usually take care of things, but unfortunately he is rarely around during the day when taking time out with particular mum friends.

Went down to part time hours after six months of asking, got the call from Ofsted so went in on my day off to get prepared. The next day the school was closed because of the snow 😅. Would have been fine but the next week we got the call again and I ended up going in on my day off to prepare for ofsted again!

I think for the first 2 years when all my children were at school, every time I made a firm commitment for during the day, one of them was ill. As in sick or high temperature, so no faking.
I only made about 3-4 commitments a year, and they weren't off school that often.
