Is it not uncommon for 3 year old boy's favourite colour to be black?

I have very little experience of little boys so every stage is new to me.
DS's (by and large a very happy little boy) favourite colour is black. This surprises me a bit. But is this not unusual for a boy so young?

Why does it matter?

My favourite colour was black at 3. At 4 it was green. Currently it's seafoam Grin

Of course it's not unusual Confused

He just likes it. He's three. Simple. Next week it'll probably be something else.

JuniperJerry · 14/09/2018 11:30

I agree it doesn't matter. But I just wondered if it was fairly common or (as I thought) a little unusual

I suppose I've never heard a young child choose black as their fave colour (it's been a fave for a while now).

Sneaky is it so much better, when seafoam green is in fashion?

My three year old can't tell me what his favourite colour is, he just says "the colours!" when I ask. Helpful.

I don't think black is that unusual...

MsOliphant · 14/09/2018 11:35

I don't think it means he has a black soul or anything like that Grin

The boy I nanny for, his favourite is 'dirty grey'- as it's the colour of the bin lorry.

DS's favourite colour was yellow. I found out it seems very bright if you are colour blind, which he is.

Perhaps the black means he has some vision problem? It might be worth getting his eyesight checked just in case.

I’m a bit confused as to why this would bother you tbh?

A child’s favourite colour isn’t indicative of anything at all really.

An adult holds all sorts of associations and connotations with the colour black. A three year old doesn’t hold any of that baggage at all.

He might just think black cars look nice shining in the sunlight, or his favourite cartoon/TV character wears black or whatever.

You are overthinking this.

JuniperJerry · 14/09/2018 11:56

I have form for over thinking things!

That said, I'm not asking because I'm "concerned" or anything but because I'm sort of ildly musing really

Not at all uncommon. Lots of boys prefer black to anything else especially when they are small. Black horses with black saddles, black cars. You can't go wrong with black!

When mine was little (4) he painted a picture which was on the wall at his kindergarten. I saw it. He had merely covered the paper with black paint! I asked him what it was, he said it was a car park. I said, "Where are the cars", and he told me the car park was closed. When I asked why it was black, he said it was night time. There's a logic in that I suppose.

Black is certainly very striking... I would think most young children are more attracted to the brighter colours but I wouldn't read ANYTHING into it- unless he's a fan of Batman?

SoyDora · 14/09/2018 12:05

Black is my 3 year old DD’s favourite colour (and has been for about a year!). I didn’t think anything of it TBH

TheClitterati · 14/09/2018 12:29

my DB's fav colour was black - from about 18 months to 4yo he refused to wear any other colours :)

My DD also really loves black and has done since she was 3 - she still rocks head to toe black looks now and gain when she isn;t wearing glitter and purple (now 7)

NonaGrey · 14/09/2018 12:35

As long as you aren’t worried Juniper. Smile

He’s unlikely to turn into a tiny goth. (Although it does sound kind of cuteGrin )

CrochetBelle · 14/09/2018 13:10

I'd be worried if I were you. Keep an eye out for a little nub growing on each side of his head, and he'll probably start asking for Marilyn Manson CDs sometime soon.

mildshock · 14/09/2018 14:43

DS1s favourite colour for a while was "rainbow". Nothing odd about black!
