Roblox

Hi all, sorry if this has already been discussed.

Are your kids playing roblox? I've only just heard about this game today for the very first time. My daughter aged 11 is looking to join ALL her other friends it seems. On my brief Internet search it would appear to not be recommended as some inappropriate content is making it past parental controls. Or is that all a bit of scaremongering?

I've asked parents of two if the girls I know play it and they're saying it's fine. Only a bit if fun.

I'm so tired of ALWAYS being the mum who says no. But I suppose that's my job. Even if my 11 year old doesn't agree.

Anyone who is gaming savvy have any thoughts? I'm not a gamer.

Thanks

Following.

My 7yr old has been nagging me about this. Apparently a bunch of his classmates have Roblox on iPads etc.

(Although he also claimed last year that his teacher let them play Fortnite on the computer in the classroom during golden time, so I don’t think he’s entirely reliable about these things.)

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 13/09/2018 20:50

It’s like any online game as long as you only play with your friends it’s ok.

Just make note of her friends gamer tags, and if you spot any ‘unknowns’ tell her she can’t play with them.

Ds2 has this rule and it works well.

You can also set up parental controls to limit to people she knows.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 13/09/2018 20:55

My 10 year old plays ROBLOX with all her friends
My rules
Play in the sitting room only (where we are)
Only I can add friends (I message the parents of her friends to make sure it's them)
I check her phone regularly and have parental controls on all games

Yeah we all play on it here Blush

Turn off the in-game chat in the settings. You’ll be unpopular with dc but otherwise randoms will be able to chat with them. Apparently I’m LITERALLY the ONLY parent who enforces this but i play too and have chat on and some of the stuff that gets through the filters is vile.

And yeah make sure they only befriend actual people they know and double check this.

Otherwise there are some great games to be played.

Dd1 keeps asking about this. She's only 7 so I'm not keen but couldn't really figure out how it worked.

ChampagneCommunist · 13/09/2018 21:19

My plays. Loves it. Our rule is that I can read the chat at any time I want

PaddysMarket · 13/09/2018 21:23

My 4 and 6 year olds play it Blush, everything is turned off so no chats, friend requests etc. My 6 year old is allowed "robucks" when he works hard at swimming and so far that bribe it working.

MeAgainSparkle · 13/09/2018 21:27

My 6 year old has been asking to play this since last year. Apparently a lot of her friends play it. I have said and continue to say no.

rightknockered · 13/09/2018 21:40

I won't allow my 8 year old to play this at all. It is full of random people that come on nd 'chat', I can't police every second she is on the family computer so just use a blanket ban on all online gaming. I let her access educational stuff, but definitely nothing that can involve on line chatting.

ednabuckett · 13/09/2018 21:42

My 7 yo DD played this for a bit. I disabled chat and also stopped her having friends on it (I can't remember how!). She's now over it and hasn't been on it for months! Perhaps I made it too boring Wink

Childrenofthesun · 13/09/2018 21:42

DD (8) plays but we've set up parental controls that mean other players can't chat to her and she isn't allowed to accept any friendship requests.

PiggeryPorcombe · 13/09/2018 21:53

It’s easy to turn chat off so there’s no real interaction with other players.

We also use Robux as incentives Blush

RCOR · 13/09/2018 22:04

Thanks for your replies.

I had read some things were making it past parental controls. Background wallpaper with animated porn images for example. However this could just be exaggeration and hype. I'll keep reading and try get a general consensus.

Even without the chat on, some people get their characters to have ‘sex’ so they take their clothes off and get into bed. With the chat on you can see what they are saying and it’s not nice, with the chat off a lot of DC would be oblivious to what they are doing but it’s still not great.

Mine play it but I go on with them and we all play together, that way I can see if anyone else is doing anything unsuitable and we’ll go onto a different game.

Or you can set up private serves so only they / their friends can go onto that particular game.
