Arm knitting!

Has anyone tried it? I’ve wanted to for a while now but the chunky wool is so expensive. Any recommendations? I’d love to make a throw for the sofa.

(I know you can buy the blankets ready made, but I’d like to make one!)

Apparently that jumbo yarn doesn't wash well at all and the blankets don't look like they do on Pinterest for long. So it's just an expensive gimmick (it does look fun though).

Dancer12345 · 13/09/2018 22:40

RaptorInaPorkPieHat Oh no, really? I hadn’t actually thought about washing it - I guess it’d have to go to a launderette due to size.

Maybe I won’t bother then. Especially as the wool is so expensive.

If you washed it in a machine it would end up felting, which is what has put me off trying this

Oh, didn’t realise that. They look so lovely and I was looking forward to the challenge of making one!

I can knit and crochet but I cannot arm knit to save my life. Despite knowing how knitting works and being familiar with how stitches are formed I just end up in a Tangled mess Hmm

You could try it with multiple strands of normal chunky yarn instead of the super thick stuff?

Meckity1 · 14/09/2018 15:00

I have no connection with Marriners Yarns (except that I buy too much of their stuff) but their superbulky is £1.50 for 100g. They have some nice looking chenille type stuff as well. I normally knit that sort of stuff on big needles, though.

I don't know about thicker yarn. I've used three strands of dk in different colours before. I like knitting blankets. I cast on stitches until I get bored and then knit until I run out of yarn. I think I need to donate some of the results to a dog shelter.

Aaaahfuck · 14/09/2018 15:01

I've done it before and tbh the holes are pretty massive so you end up making more of a net. Not in the same way all knitting is really a bet with little holes either. But it was fun to do.

Dancer12345 · 14/09/2018 15:16

Ooh multiple strands, great idea! I may also end up in a tangled mess though! Glad it’s fun, even if it is a bit net-like!

I've used this technique before making yarn chunkier:

Works well with crochet but I think I'd have to be cut free if I did it for arm knitting Wink

picklemepopcorn · 14/09/2018 15:59

I was successful making scarves with a reasonably priced super chunky wool. The first and last rows were not even though, and the finish where ends were sewn in was not good.

Free patterns for blankets of all sorts (you can substitute yarns, as a rule of thumb go for a yarn that has the same recommended needle size)

Have a rummage around their site. It's not bad.

This is the blanket I knitted in three strands of yarn but I used purple, dark blue and pale blue double knitting. It's pretty easy and you end up with a lovely, snuggly blanket www.yarnspirations.com/gb/caron-ombre-ridge-knit-blanket/CAK0502-001904V.html?id=201576 (pics attached hopefully)

And for those who impulse buy, yarn is often in Aldi. Today they had 400g of chunky for £3.99. I don't know how I resisted!
