Mirena Coil

Has it worked for you? What was the insertion and aftermath like?

I've booked in to get one next week (4 weeks postpartum with my third and final baby) and I'm a bit nervous. All I've heard are horror stories from friends so I thought I'd cast the net a little wider for personal experiences! I know what works for one may not work for another so I'm willing to give it a shot, I just want to go in with my eyes wide open.

Thank you!

Had mine inserted during my c section. Has been great.

Thanks ALongHardWinter, that's reassuring to hear. I'm due to have another fitted next year and I think that will be my last, by which point hopefully I'll be through the worst (I'll be 52/3). Interesting that you think it helped with the symptoms, I wonder if that's typically the case?

My GP reckons so. In particular with huge flooding periods. She says the numbers of hysterectomies have fallen dramatically because of the mirena.
My menopausal symptoms consisted only of hot flushes, albeit quite bad ones. I never had any hormonal mood swings or weight gain. Hard to know whether it's because of the coil of course.

@MsHomeSlice, you had yours snipped?

Sorry am intensely curious about this as I must have been more tightly packed with fibroids than a can of sardines, they all came out at once which gave me a horrific shock, apart from one. They don't seem to be bothered about my lone remainer.

Doctors didn't suggest snipping it but did suggest Mirena coil.

I love mine! I resisted getting one for ages after reading horror stories but it has been wonderful. I’ve had one period after it was fitted (end of July) and then so far the lightest period ever- a pantyliner’s worth. I was having awful pain, flooding, clots which is why it was suggested.

Fitting was ok. I’ve only had c-sections so my cervix is small. I’ve not got a mirena but a kyleena (I think) it is v similar but smaller. Fitting was like a smear, a tiny bit of cramping afterwards but not as bad as a period.

I wish I’d had one years ago.

MsHomeSlice · 14/09/2018 17:14

Languid yes...she thought it was a cervical polyp, and it wasn't until she said to the nurse "take these scissors back and pass me that tissue sample bottle" I realised the "let's have a closer look at this" was less of your actual looking and more of your actual dealing with. And she then said she thought she only had the top of it and it may have been an escaping fibroid :v using my cervix as a nice rollneck. :o

I had a follow up after it was pronounced fine, the second chap said he wasn't certain which it was either, but it was right on the edge of the cervix, he could see where it had been, so I guess that sort of leans toward the cervical polyp rather than escaping fibroid.

But still, I think I have let enough people look in my pants area for the next long long while.

Adding to the "it changed my life" group. Fan tas tic. Had one after dd1, very hard to fit (planned c section so cervix had seen no action), but worked like a charm. Roll forwards 10 years (and 3 more dc), my periods had turned into murder scenes. Hideous.

My "lady problems" gp fitted it (says she does about 10 a week), brilliant. However, it took a good year to settle down. My only symptom now is a solitary spot and sore breasts for two days or so a month. I'm not planning on ever having another period (42 now).

My sister had a bad reaction to hers though, so I guess we are all different.

DeadCertain · 14/09/2018 17:30

Bit of a pinch when it was first fitted (I don't have children though) then no periods at all. When I had it changed they couldn't find the original one at all so I was rebooked for someone else to try and find it (sexual health clinic both times) or the option of a GA. I opted to have a second person try and find it which was really, really uncomfortable but ultimately successful. Then the new one was inserted which was fine compared to what I had just been through!!

A friend had to have hers located and changed under GA for the same reason.

Dreading needing it changed again early next year but it's worth it as it's so infrequent and otherwise suits me well (and I am hoping I'll not be unlucky twice!!).

PoesyCherish · 14/09/2018 17:33

I've had two. My first one became dislodged and the out of hours nurse had to remove it as I was in excruciating pain.

The second one worked great for 18 months but has become lost and I'm awaiting a scan to try and find it. I lost the strings shortly after a cervical smear test. Went to the family planning clinic and the nurse and then the doctor had a look and couldn't see it. So now I'm waiting for a scan to see if it's still there.

magpieC · 14/09/2018 17:53

I had one fitted and it was uncomfortable during fitting but awful (took paracetamol first).

Unfortunately it fell out without me noticing and the follow up faff of checking it hadn't ended up anywhere it shouldn't put me off tryng again (2 nurse examinations, internal ultrasound and then xray).

magpieC · 14/09/2018 17:54

not awful

candlefloozy · 16/09/2018 08:03

Since the day I've had it fitted I haven't had a proper period. I won't use any other type of contraception now. It's been great. I do sometimes get period pain but no bleeding or spotting. Had it in for a year and half now.
